WTF is an Eagles supporter doing at a North game Mk II

Postby Wedgie » Sat Jul 08, 2006 11:41 pm

Today I was amazed to see the really old fella who's been following the Eagles for years, you know the one, the bloke who collects the cans every week, at Prospect!

I made the mistake of asking him why he wasn't at Woodville and he went on a half hour descripitve as to how he hates Ron Fuller!

I still doubt his motives, I reckon he was there as there's much more cans at a North game to collect and less people to compete with to pick them up!

(True story, everyone knows the guy I'm talking about, he actually said Ronny told him to F*** OFF which is a bit disappointing considering the bloke is at least partly retarded)

If he wants to act like that, he can go to more North games for all I care.

Bit of a harsh line mate, what do you expect of a mentally retarded person if the coach of a club he loves tells him to F*** OFF.
I personally found it quite sad and would be doing my utmost to get him back to games as opposed to putting him down further.

PS He was at a North v South game, not just a North game, he told me how much he loves his SANFL and still wanted to get along, he wasn't barracking for either side, I think he was too busy with the amount of cans produced at the Grog Squad bar!

So then what is the use of someone like that going to a game if that's all they are going to do? Even if he has an impairment, he is better off not going to the Eagles matches, at least until Fuller leaves.

That's a fair point spelly, if a mentally impaired person is only going to get agrieved at the game because the coach of their beloved side told them to F*** Off you're right and he's probably made the right move just going to another game so full marks to him, I'm certainly not putting him down, quite the opposite if anything. The gentleman in question seemed to enjoy himself today even when hanging around the Grogs and good on him I say.

In a perfect world (or a half reasonable club) it'd be nice if clubs (or coaches) looked after these people who probably live for the game and club more than they do.

I know from a personal point of view I quite often go out of my way to talk to people like him or others like Alex from Sturt as I find them a delight to talk to and I think its great there's something in their life that they enjoy so much. I'm just a big softy though.

Hey, I agree Wedgie, they are true characters of the game, especially Alex the "one point" man. :) It is also correct that clubs should do more for these types of people, after all, they are are among the most loyal SANFL fans of them all.

And when I say about one fan in particular about bagging the coach, that goes for any specatator who just shows up to bag their own team, they are better off following another club. Just like Super Sid did.

You just reminded me of a cracker of a story from the Sturt V Glenelg match at the Bay last year.
Alex was doing his thing when a Bay player was lining up for a shot on goal and an over zealous security man came up to him and wanted to eject him for being racist because he thought he was saying "w*g boy w*g boy w*g boy w*g boy". Took us about five minutes to explain to security but it was all sorted in the end

he he gold, Alex is a champ, I always enjoy chatting to him briefly. I too have a funny story (or 2) about him.

In the mid 90s he used to always talk to me as he liked to discuss who was in and out of the budget, he told me he was sick of Sturt losing and if North won that day he'd barrack for North. I thought we were a monty to get Alex over as I'd actually thrown $200 on North to win with the bookies, it was the days when Sturt would be lucky to win 2 or 3 games a year and it was at Prospect.
Sure enough, Sturt got up, Sturt kept Alex and I lost my money.

Also in the late 90s, he once again asked me for help to cross out who was in and out for both sides, after spening a good 10 minutes with him (Mrs Wedgie didn't know what was going on) he finally had all the ins and outs correctly inserted or crossed out in his budget. This was before the game started (just).

At half time he came over to me again to show me his budget and how he'd crossed out all the ins out and outs and proudly told me he'd done it all himself! (forgetting that an hour earlier I did most of it for him, half of the inserts were in my handwriting!!).
I just congratulated Alex and he walked away looking as proud as punch!

He's an absolute Legend, I quite often see him walking down Unley Rd when Im driving to work and I get quite excited pointing him out to Mrs Wedgie and she thinks I'm crazy!

I've been told by Lurch (I'm sure a few on here would know who he is) that in about the last 25 years, the only games Alex has missed is when he's been in hospital for operations.

I wouldn't doubt that, I've seen him at a few other SANFL games when Sturt have the bye too. Although at those games he doesn't shout out:

1 Point 1 Point 1 Point 1 Point
