Whilst on coaching recruits, Norwood had two in the early 80s. First Kevin Sheedy was gonna be our coach but it fell through at his end due to family circumstances. Then we got Neil Balme instead who's playing career at Norwood never quite worked out for us, but he did deliver us a few flags.

John Platten and Gilbert McAdams much anticipated returns to Central were absolute flops.
Wayne Johnson
Trent Hotton
Graham Cornes to South/Rick Davies to South
And my all time favourite Dale Lewis to coach Norwood what were they thinking?

Woodville - "the Mighty Peckers". Never did quite work out, did they, but were always everyone's second team!

This is going away a bit from the intended subject of the thread, but its interesting to look at ex VFL players who went back to their original club and DID make a success of things (compared to Platten who who was still a superstar at his best). I can think of Abernethy and Phillips in 87, Michael Taylor back to Norwood, as well as Blight back to Woodville.

I didn't think Rod Tregenza was THAT bad at South. Maybe spelly has some stats ie games/goals during his time in the SANFL :)

Yeah, you're right, but in the overall scheme of things, South probably didn't get their value for money in terms of longevity from him. I know he was a capable goal kicker and is still kicking something like 180 goals a season is some country Perth competition, as read on here somewhere.

Maybe could take him off the list, I guess ???

You don't need to take him off the list Phil, i'm not criticising you for putting him on there, i just thought he wasn't quite as bad as some of the others you listened, which i think you got pretty much fairly right :)

wrong there on that one I reckon - Knowles was good at North but just didn't want to hang around for obvious reasons - the club was crap at the time.

Was he there when Hart was coaching there 6 or so years ago? Made me think of a midfielder who was there then, was a real standout, longish hair, returned to Victoria to play in the VFL/amateurs 4 or 5 years ago. Anyone remember who that was?? Unusual name i think.

Clinton King won the Knuckey Cup in 2004, left in 2005, Tom Tarrant, Tim Fleming, Corey Mc Grath all bombed out, Tregenza lead the South goalkicking for a couple of years, but followed his wife back to WA

Ben Setchell ???

Played a fair bit down in Tassie, still playing for them the last few years in the VFL comp. My folks were down in the Apple Isle wearing their Doggies gear at the pub and the old man said Ben came and introduced himslef and asked about how Centrals Tasmanian players were going...

Is this topic about "duds" or players who left for other reasons because I can't believe from a North point of view that people have mentioned both Knowles and Setchell? Both were very good players in crap teams. Setchell had 4 or 5 years with us and was one of our few consistent good players. Brett Knowles, I am fairly sure led the league in total possessions in his one year with us but he was a football "slut" and played where the moeny was. He was finished when he was the only Senior Player not to donate one weeks match payments back to the club for the change room upgrade at a time when $ at Prospect were as rare as a North win! He was "mysteriously" dropped for the last 3 games IIRC.

North have had plenty of "duds" lead by Burrows and Marty Whitelaw both from WA. Along with a couple of WA recruits we have had over time I think that our recriters should never look West of the SA border again!

Sam Jones at the Eagles. Probably one of our first Victorian recruits. Went to Westies and must have played some ok footy there. Got sent of in his last finals game at footy park IIRC.

Bolton twins
Thompson returning to the club after an AFL "stint".
