I'd have him back .. Played our best brand of football in the last 5 years under him, and he only had the 1 season to implement his style ... Unfairly cops a bum wrap from most IMHO.

From Port id say our 96 list of recruits were terrible. We picked up 3 young guys from the AFL in Matt Belleville, Sam Cranage and Chris Curcio. Belleville didnt play a game and headed back to Victoria 1/4 way through the year I think, Cranage and Curcio played in the first match against Centrals and looked miles out of their depth. Looked like we'd plucked 2 U17s players to play league. One of them (cant remember which one), absolutely shat their pants when they saw Peter Green coming the other way and coughed up the ball. Neither went anywhere near playing another game. Didnt stop us winning the flag though.

Shane Morrison was awful. As he did in the AFL, put supporters in a false sense of security with great pre season form only to turn into an absolute crab when the real stuff started. Went from CHF to CHB to reserves.

Hayden Kluver back in 01 or 02 I think. Came from Brisbanes list, looked like tarzan, played like jane. Looked like he'd never kicked a football before.

Guys like Brad Nicholson, Damon Shaw, Spiro Malakellis, Andrew Morrison never lived up to expectations and of course Alvey and Pickett must be mentioned too.

Peter Green was a pretty good recruit for Centrals, in my opinion, Big Phil.

Mate, I agree 100%...

He still remians one of my favourite ALL time players EVER....

I added him to the list more so because he came over with pretty big wraps and probably didn't quite live up to expectation, mainly die to injury and the fact he only spent 2 years over here.

More disaapointment he didn't have longevity with the Doggies than anything else...

Rod Tregenza was great for us, kicked 60 odd in his first year in a terrible side.

Peter Shepperd, forgot about him, can I say to redandblack 'I told you so'.....
Hi, My name is Ron 'Bluey' Dunn. Did you know I played in the 61 & 62 Tasman Premiership sides....

I'm a bit bemused by some of the West names. I thought this thread was about 'dud' recruits.

Peter Shepherd actually was West's leading goalkicker the year he played, although with a low total. He could play - as for character, well......

Pat Steinfort was a very good player. His problem was that he didn't play often.

Sam Jones played great football for us.

As for 'duds', try Nick Trask, recruited from Brisbane, played one or two Reserves games, was way overweight and disappeared soon after the start of the season.

Sturt: Luke Jarjoura. Untapped ability but just couldn't commit to the high standards set by the SFC.

Sturt had high standards in 2006?
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Fair enough, can't say I followed him all that closely when he left the Eagles.

Your points are valid r&b, very valid...

But the thread isn't exactly about "dud" players more so just about players who came into the system with high expectations or reputations and didn't quite live it up to it. Certainly include duds, that's a fair chunk of what it's about...

But also players, like Sheppard, that came into the SANFL as a flash in the pan, set the league on fire, and then dissapeared off the face of the football earth. I guess the title of the thread is open to broader judgement but it's up to the individual how they percieve it and who they post...

Cheers Mate,

BP

Justin Berry @ South Adelaide

Has been a super consistant player with Frankston in the VFL for a few years and played for VIC this year in the State Game at Adelaide Oval that we pumped them in.

He had a few tatts on the arms and always had an exentric hair cut. Once it was a purple died mo-hawk !!!

Not complete stats, but up to Round 18 2004 he had played 32 games and kicked 94 goals.

FlyingHigh wrote:Sam Jones at the Eagles. Probably one of our first Victorian recruits. Went to Westies and must have played some ok footy there. Got sent of in his last finals game at footy park IIRC.

Elimination Final 2001 that was. He got reported twice in about 5 minutes, I just missed seeing that getting there for the following game, but I did see Adam Richardson use some weight when the ball was down the other end. :) I think Jones got 5 matches overall, but that was academic.

I thought Merriman was a good acquisition in 2004, played every match, but that was the only season he was here for.

Yeah, Merriman wasn't a dud, but just disappointing he only stayed one year.

drebin wrote:Is this topic about "duds" or players who left for other reasons because I can't believe from a North point of view that people have mentioned both Knowles and Setchell? Both were very good players in crap teams. Setchell had 4 or 5 years with us and was one of our few consistent good players. Brett Knowles, I am fairly sure led the league in total possessions in his one year with us but he was a football "slut" and played where the moeny was. He was finished when he was the only Senior Player not to donate one weeks match payments back to the club for the change room upgrade at a time when $ at Prospect were as rare as a North win! He was "mysteriously" dropped for the last 3 games IIRC.

You can blame me for bringing up Setchell's name Drebin  i went off the track of the topic  was just trying to remember his name. I certainly agree he was a good player for NA.
