Future of SANFL Finals at Footy Park?

Postby Squawk » Sun Jul 09, 2006 11:24 pm

The State Govt has just given the SACA $16 million to relieve debt and enable them to work towards upgrading the Western Stand.

Should the SANFL (again) look at playing all finals, (including Grand Finals) at Adelaide Oval?

With the GF crowds of the last few years, it wouldn't be a bad option, and at least you can stand on the hill, and have a beer (even if it's mid strength) and a smoke.
If the 2 sides playing in the GF were both good crowd pullers though, Adelaide might not be big enough.

Well, I'm not sure if I agree with the move, but the WAFL decided last week to play their semi-finals at the home ground of the team which finished higher on the ladder.

Adelaide Oval for all finals would be great. I would probally go to watch any team play. Footy Park sucks, too cold and uninviting!!!

i'd rather have a packed out adelaide oval than a halve filled
football park in a grand final...what's the most you will get there
with 2 crowd pulling teams ? eg ..centrals/port 30,000 - 35,000..
at the most....which won't happen every year...so i say bring on
adelaide oval...imagine the atmosphere...i'd go even if my club
wasn't involved...and also bring back the days when all the grades
played there on the same day...eg under 17's /19's reserves then
the league...starting at 9.30 am or there abouts...what a big day
out that would be....it used to be that way every year.

Nup, keep the GF at Footy Park.

All other finals are OK at AO.

A Central v Port GF would draw more than 30,000 - 35,000 IMHO.

Any GF involving any of North sturt port Norwood or centrals will exceed 30,000.

For that very reason it must be played at Football Park.

No way known the SANFL will let the GF be played at Adelaide Oval.

At least not for a tiday sum.

The whole purpose of building Footy Park was to stop the SACA bending the league over the table.

If only for leverage, Footy Park will be maintained.

Adelaide Oval all the way.
Atmpsoheric, Inviting, Beautiful.

Footy Park is a real B***h to get to if you don't live in the Western Suburbs.

The GF MUST stay at Footy Park, the bigger sides draw close to sellouts there. You only have to look back at the Sturt v Port and Norwood v Port games there in the late 80s.
Things will turn, if North play a Port in the GF this year it will be close to a sell out again.
I couldln't think of anything worse than trying to take my kids to a GF at Adelaide Oval with over 40,000 people there.
Christ, they can't even handle a crowd of 4,000 there in regard to catering, imagine 10 times that??

I don't have a problem with playing every other final at Adelaide Oval as much as I dislike the hole BUT I do think the idea of "Home" finals would be fantastic but logistics may prevent it from being a possibility.
