I also think Tom Couch is a little unlucky to be shown the door. His pace and intensity was not his strong point - but he had a very good long kick and good kick at goal and I think he could develop into a league player. If not on much coin - surely would have been worth another season to see as a depth player.

Still, if the young man wants opportunity then the club has probably done the right thing by him in giving him a chance to try out elsewhere, instead of dragging him along. He may make it, who knows, hopefully he does. Plenty of others have after being shown the door.

I guess we have the likes of Daniel, Pavlich, Hicks etc. who are local players with similar attributes who we are better off giving an opportunity, to reward the underage players coming through.

In the end it is another black mark against the horrible recruiting campaign for the 2008 season. They do seem to be doing a bit of a clean out this year, as opposed to players leaving of their own accord.

After an inauspicious start to his Eagle career in a trial match at Richmond Oval which was pointed out to me by Dick the league umpire today, I began to appreciate some of his skills and enjoyed watching him play, but as I have previously posted, the reduction to three teams at league clubs will inevitability cause heartache. I feel Tom's main problem was lack of pace and for the positions he played this was a crucial minus. What will most probably be said at the club is "we have a lot of his type" an expression that is too often trotted out.

I assume we are all correct that tom has been shown door .Because someone should have stopped on the couch .Reading that I get the impression it was before he was told .

I am surprised (and i may get shot by the other faithful here) that Pavlich is still with the club .He certainly is only a seconds player and no offence meant just IMHO.
And I am starting to get the feeling that Ron and the Board are doing what Sheedy used to do at Essendon .And IMHO if it means we go forward and win a flag then go for it.
BUT some of these decisions may bite the club on the field if we do not recruit or promote correct personal .We as a club can not afford to recruit the likes of a Biagi (who didnt go back to the vfl but a lower grade in melb) but players that will go the distance.

Cheers

Why is it that SANFL recruit players from interstate without discussing the pros and cons with either Ports or the crows recruiting people. These guys would have seen Couch play for a couple of years and would have said that it is unlikely that the guy will be a good reserves footballer no matter a good league player.

The AFL clubs pick the SANFL clubs brains when it comes to players so it is only fair that these guys do the same back about potential recruits.

Speaking of interstate recruits Lukas Markovic would be who I would be targeting if I was a SANFL club.

Ask Westies about him, and Ryan Breese, (and the 15 Norwood players they rang as well!).
I think the PAMS are after Zac Dawson, whatever.
Steve Bradbury and Michael Milton. Aussie Legends.

I was thinking that was the Davey he was talking about but not 100% sure, he was the pny tailed one at Norwood yeah ???

There was a Michael Davey that played a handful of league games at Centrals then went to the Eagles for a couple of years, mainly playing 2's from memory ???

Ive not heard anything from any official source BP, but I'd be surprised if the Johns story is correct mate.
Fairy Nuff CP...

This was the quote from the Ben, Bec & Buzz page from today's Sunday Mail...
Johns On Parade

DELISTED ESSENDON player Courtney Johns appears destined for the SANFL next season.
He has met with several clubs, but our mail is on Norwood landing the signature of the 194cm forward.
If he does head to the Parade, he'll join Kieran McGuinness and Gavin Hughes, who will both return to the club in 2009.
Johns played 21 games with Bombers

I can bury this rumour categorically. Norwood is not chasing Johns.

Another fine piece of journalism from Ben Hack.
Courtney Johns would be a very good acquisition at any SANFL league club...

He would have been a team mate of Paul Thomas when at Essendon, so perhaps the Dogs might be speaking to the big man with Luke Cowan retiring ?
He's all yours Phillis...worst player to ever don an AFL guernsey...the fact he was on Essendon's list for so long speaks volumes of where that club is at...

Ackland and Johns tie for the "worst ever" award.

Lot of Ackland bagging going on here. Whilst not being up to AFL he was playing some pretty good SANFL footy before he left with a smaller body. I think he'll be a good pick up for the Roosters.....
Hi, My name is Ron 'Bluey' Dunn. Did you know I played in the 61 & 62 Tasman Premiership sides....

193cm key defender, originally from Box Hill. 22 at the start of next year. Good mark, good skills. Was the no.2 pick in the 2005 Rookie draft, but broke his leg in a final in 2006. Took him a long time to recover.
