Another SA road question - Regency Road

Postby spell_check » Sat Jul 15, 2006 12:20 am

There is a roadsign somewhere along Regency Road (Probably more than one like this) which says "Formerly Irish Harp Road". I know there is "Irish Harp Reserve", but when did the road become Regency Road?

Well, I knew my collection of old Adelaide street directories would come in useful one day

It appears as though the change happened some time between 1961 and 1965.

In the Gregory's 16th Edition (published 1961) Regency Rd was known as:

 Islington Rd between Torrens and Churchill roads
 Irish Harp Rd between Churchill and Main North roads
 Rakes Rd between Main North and Hampstead roads

In the Gregory's 17th Edition (published 1965) it had changed to Regency Road the whole way.

By the way, if anyone has old Gregory's Adelaide Street directories lying around, I am prepared to pay some money for them ($5-$10) provided they are ones I don't have and are in reasonable condition.

I am currently missing editions 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,9,11,12,14,20,22,24,25,32,33,38,44,45,49,50,51

A way to get closer to the year is to obtain the UBD 6th Edition, which was published in 1963. The 5th edition was published in 1961 and the 7th in 1965.

The years not covered from the first year UBD published a street directory of Adelaide (1957), along with Gregorys' combined is: 1962, 1964, 1967, 1974 and 1979. For some reason Gregorys' published two editions in 1973 - 23rd and 24th.

Found this about Rakes Road:

Olive Farm Estate
Nomenclature
A subdivision of part section 330-31, Hundred of Yatala by Beaven Rake in 1920; now included in Broadview. Rakes Road, now part of Regency Road, was named after him. The Advertiser of 6 September 1919 at page 16 says:

Olive Farm has been in the possession of the Rake family since 1847. The soil is noted for its fertility and many fine records have been established there in cereal crops.

I find this really interesting actually.
I like looking at old maps etc.

Anyone have the UBD on their computer ? I use it all the time, it's like having a map of Adelaide on the wall - can see everything at once!

Another weird thing - check your street directory for DAW PARK and check the boundaries .....

Something which sort of explains that is how Colonel Light Gardens used to be a council area just by itself.

Another interesting road fact, which I didn't realise for many years, was where the name "Glynburn" Rd came from...

Where did Glynburn Road's name come from ?

Colonel Light Gardens wasn't a council by itself - at least I didn't think so.
I think it was for the "1000 House Project" where they built houses for returning soldiers. But they ran out of room and had to cross over Goodwood Road. Unsure why Daw Park had to be split (if it even was - your old street directories would be great for that) but imagine the furore NOW if you told 15% of CLG that they would change to Daw Park :)

Definitely was a separate council according to the old street directories.

Haha, ok - I get it now :) Boring, really! But take it for granted that's it.

So CLG was it's own council as well - interesting!
I find DAW PARK more facinating though... now you can leave it and then go back in to it.

Yep, came about after a Woodville-West Torrens style merger of Burnside Rd and Glynde Rd.

Here is a link to a map from 1940 showing the three roads that are now known as Regency Road. Quite interesting that there were quite a few roads that had different names then, and the different suburb names.

You can see all of the maps from that year here:

same here, Hilton by the looks of it used to be south of what is Bradman Drive now not north as is today. Where it was has now become Richmond. clearly see the reserve for the oval.

Also Cowandilla has lost its H these days

Doesnt also have something to do with the fact that CLG (as in the whole suburb) is heritage listed or something?
