Punk Rooster you are way off the boil, these kids are trying there best to get involved into our community. this lad that got stabbed is a good young lad who was playing football at our club last year and this year, they all want to learn more about the football and this is there way to get into our community by playing a sport.

Punk Rooster i would say that you would have a mix of culture involved in your club also.

IMO it is very Australian to have these people living in our country...those that dont perhaps should be the ones not living here...
Dress does reflect attitude Dutchy. It displays who in our broader society is being identified with.
Our own kids are identifying with, and mimic some poor models, so I guess it is not surprising immigrant kids have done the same.
Perhaps we need to do something about our society as a whole and where it is going - the problem is in reaching consensus on what to do.
Meanwhile, we drift, and the aggression and violence slowly increase...

I agree however that the bulk of immigrants, like the bulk of our longer term Australian families, do try to be good citizens.
And they have enriched our society by adding extra dimensions to it.

I used to dress in op shop gear and had long hair when I was a teenager. My footy team-mates thought my dress made me look like Kurt Cobain, so they gave me that nickname.
That doesn't instantly mean my life took on Kurt's lifestyle....

We are all a bit extreme as teenagers DW. I had my somewhat out there style for my era, too. It is normal to push the limits a bit at that age.
I just didn't mimic criminals, or hang around in gangs regularly, having worked out where that led when aged about 12.
I do remember, later, occasionally hanging around briefly with a group at Henley Beach when my family visited relatives there and I went off with my cousins. I remember one guy showing me proudly the ingenious way he'd embedded bits of razor blade in a length of bike chain, and making the appropriate impressed noises before I left - I picked up their was a "rumble" with the West Beach boys about to start and I didn't want to be there for it...

I guess that sort of thing has always been with us.

So, because they are wearing 50 Cent t-shirts and posturing, they are mimicking crims?

Although 50 Cent may not be a good example to use....

But let's just remember the hip-hoppers of today are the Elvis rockers of yesteryear. Each generation has its 'scarey' look.

Talking nicely to them about it doesn't make much difference - they just see you as being weak.

That is really the central issue about taking in refugees, it does change your society.
Adopting kids beyond the age of infancy carries similar risks.

I'm not sure what the answer is now we have done it though.

Sorry folk, but for the meantime it's best we lock it, even though the majority have posted very maturely...

If for any reason this changes, we'll unlock it and play on...

Thanks

disgraceful punk! here is a kid that has come across from a country that is war-stricken and in major poverty. He is playing football at a club and trying to fit in and socialise with the broader community. It is obvious that these Sudanese lads have been brought up in this war-stricken era back home and some of them 'the minority' bring it to australia. They have had an 'in house' fight and the attitudes of some and their culture that they have been brought up in has led to this. Instead of saying 'chuck them on a boat and p*** em off' what about trying to educate the kids, providing them places and reasons to socialise with the 'average australian teenager' and helping these kids settle into australian life. We cant just expect them to fit in straight away. The kid is fourteen and simply should not happen anywhere in the world. we had an australian shoot someone dead in the Melbourne CBD not that long ago, it's a part of every culture, but something we all must work together to fight and to not allow it to be apart of any culture. RIP to the young fella..and my thoughts are with him, his family and the kenilworth f.c

I think more to the point is when you dress with the intent to intimidate, you cant expect all parts of society to embrace you.

In Melbourne Sudanese gangs are attacking other teenagers every week.
If you're walking down the street and theyre coming towards you it is VERY intimidating.

and by no means are they ONLY intimidating crew on the street.

If they were white and all dressed up like wannabe gangstas would you still be intimidated?

Just speculating here, but I have a suspicion that this was a Muslim/Christian clash.

The Sudanese community is pretty tight, but I guess there will always be a minority who let religion divide.
