Seal Loses Lucy's Light Episode

(and rightfullly so, its a disgrace it took till now)

This from Friday's Advertiser:

Bookie must pay sting winnings
By Dennis Markham

LEADING Adelaide bookmaker Curly Seal says he is "shattered" by a ruling that now requires him to pay $374,000 to Sydney punter Eddie Hayson after a betting sting on a greyhound race at the Gold Coast eight months ago.

"I'm not shattered about the amount of money involved because I've had bigger losing bets," he said yesterday.

"I view this as a bad day at the office and paying out won't be a problem. I have said that from day one of this dispute.

"But I am shattered that the (Liquor and Gambling) Commissioner has come up with this ruling because my legal advice suggested we had a very strong case.

"Now I have to work out with my lawyers whether to appeal to the Independent Gambling Authority or simply pay Mr Hayson."

Seal was easily the hardest hit of a number of bookmakers who took bets on a greyhound race won by long odds-on favourite Lucy's Light.

Hayson and a friend, Steve Fletcher, manipulated the TAB dividend by backing the other five dogs in the race, which grossly inflated the odds about Lucy's Light from an opening $1.04 to $13.

Seal had an agreement to pay all bets at TAB odds (dividends).

Liquor and Gambling Commissioner Bill Pryor investigated the issue after a complaint by Seal and took legal argument from lawyers representing both the bookmaker and Hayson.

Late on Wednesday, he advised both parties, through their respective lawyers, of his decision in favour of Hayson.

Seal has 30 days in which to decide whether to appeal against the finding.

An Adelaide punter, who won $300,000 from Seal on the same race, owed that amount to the bookmaker from previous losing bets.

His account was given a nil balance but Seal reserved the right to claim the loss back if the Commissioner ruled in his favour.

Tough luck Curly, not short of a $ that bloke and no doubt he knew what the outcome would be.As the Sheik said though, still well within his rights to wait until the verdict was handed down before he coughed up.

I bet he is up for interest on the debt though now!!!! from my calculations that would be aroung another $10k he has to pay out, serves him right.

IMO he should have been made to pay out imediately and then chased his money thorugh the legal system if he so desired.

No he's not Dutchy, not on an enquiry. Same as if you have a dispute over a bet with a bookie & it goes before the betting tribunal.
Why should have he had to pay out if an inquiry was held ?
Would have you paid on a personal bet on the Monday after the Freeo St Kilda fiasco after the AFL decided on an enquiry?
Do you think if the enquiry was upheld the two shysters would have given the money back ?

Anyhow the quids he'll get from the court case involving the defamation issues in NSW should more than cover any losses involved.

I don't have a problem with violence, we just can't slander & defame him, as there could be legal action, just as there is in NSW (or somewhere).
I go on record as saying that any punting/business dealings I've had with Curly have been to our mutual satisfaction.

Sorry AG, but it's true, I don't have a problem with Curly (that's hardly sitting on the fence ).
I used to have an account with him- I had no problems whatsoever getting bets on, or getting paid when I wanted.
If I did have a problem, I would say so.
Same for John Thornton, so I can hardly come here & complain about them!
Fair enough you may not have a fruitful relationship, but we still need to be careful with what we say.

i just find it strange that every other betting agency paid out after the race was run and he was the only one not too and probably made sure he made interest on some of that money.

He was completely stupid enough to agree to pay tote odds and the punters took a risk and backed the other runners, but they got rewarded in the end.

What would have happened if the dog had went up with the lids, turned in the boxes, broke down, fought, etc i bet Curly wouldnt have refunded the bet then????

Curly should just admit he got out played by a smart punter and move on and in future be careful about letting people have tote odds.
