Brisbane Storm 16th November 2008

I heard that there was a severe storm in Brisbane yesterday... but I didn't realise how bad it actually was until I saw it on the news just then

Sounds really, really bad.

They said that in one place they had 50mm of rain in 15 minutes.

Much is said about how great Brisbane weather is; maybe in the winter, but that's about it.

Yeah Winter is great, mild/warm sunny days and cool nights.
Much better than the southern winter experience.

On the other hand if you don't like humidity much, then the rest of the year isn't as pleasant.
It's fine though with A/C and a pool nearby

The storm yesterday afternoon is typical of the sub-tropical climate.
It was hot and sunny for most of the day before darkening and the thunder, lightning, rain and wind began.
Can be great night time entertainment, but obviously not so good when the storm has destructive impact.

The last couple of weeks when they have forecasted rain, it has never come.

No, very sheltered where I am fortunately.
No loss of power and only found out about the damage elsewhere the following morning.

Speaking from the epicentre of Brisbane's tornado, and after a day of cleaning, mopping, blowing dry etc of carpets, treatment rooms etc. We have lost all vaccines, power out for 13hrs.
Simply too much water in too short a time: cliplock roof, box gutters overflowing: here, the chemist beside us, the supermarket beside them.
Water through the light fittings etc.
Half of The Gap is a shambles. Lots of sutures, abrasions, small fractures.
Started with 4 out of 9 consulting rooms up and running this am, and 1 out of 3 treatment rooms: now 6 out of 9, and 2 out of 3.
The ceiling fell down in part of the waiting room overnight.

I wouldn't mind the wet weather, but not the humidity. Having not been to Brisbane, the closest I've come to experiencing that type of humidity and mid 20s, was in Mount Gambier of all places, earlier this year, and I don't think I could get used to that for a summer.

I'd have guessed November too; if the gutters ever overflow at chez Pseudo, it's always in November.

I remember NYE 1995 well. Having spent the previous X NYE's having a miserable time (NYE seems to bring out the d!ckhead in people, your humble narrator included) I decided to stay home by my lonesome and watch videos. Never have I enjoyed a torrential downpour as much as I did that night.

I remember NYE in 1995 too - there was a helluva storm and IIRC the Glenelg and Brightonm jetties were seriously damaged.

Spelly, I think a heatwave is 5 consecutive days over 35 degrees. That 15 day one was calculated as a 1 in 3000 year event and prompted T-Shirt City to release a shirt with the moniker of "3000 years in the making, 15 days in the baking".
