SANFL back to the 70s

Postby Wedgie » Fri Jul 14, 2006 5:03 pm

Well its official, the SANFL is having a back to the 70s round in Round 17.

The SANFL have put together this commercial and is celebrating the fun and ( bad ) fashion of the 1970’s in the Living in the 70’s Theme Round, Round 17 July 29th and 30th.

Here’s a sneak preview of the TV ad that will run in the week leading up to the Saturday and Sunday celebrations. Feel free to forward it on as they would like as many people as possible to come along to the footy that weekend dressed in 70’s gear.

Just right click on it and "Save target as". Warning, its 2.8mb.

Best dressed will win a Nano I-Pod

There’s even an AIR GUITAR competition at each ground with prizes of electric guitar and amplifier sets.

There’ll be 70’s cars, 70’s music, competitions, face painters, Coca Cola yoyos and plenty more entertainment for kids and adults alike.

Saw the promo this morning ... I think a themed round, particularly one like this, is a great initiative by the SANFL .. At least they are having a crack at it, and this particular theme hopefully targets the many supporters who have gradually disappeared since the inception of South Australian AFL participation!

I could be wrong, but didn't they change to the wolves in 1980?

(It could have been 1979, Im sure it coincided with when they wore red and black vertical stripes though)

they went stripes from the time Fos went there in 74-75. As soon as Kerley came back so did the sash.

Looking back on a similar discussion in the Westies Talk forum Bob Keddie (coach of 73) brought the stripes in in 1973 but you're right that Kerle's brought back the sash in 1981 when he took over as coach.

An update of this coming weekend:

LIVING IN THE 70’s YEAH BABY…!!!
This weekend the SANFL steps back in time to launch the “Living in the 70’s” Theme Round.
We’re bringing the 70’s cars, 70’s groovy music and 70’s funky threads to the SANFL suburban grounds.

To launch the “Living in the 70’s” Theme Round the SANFL, with the help of Stephen “Rowey” Rowe and Wayne “The Weed” Weidemann, has hit the airways with a funky new TV commercial to get footy fans into the swing of things.
Groovy 70’s tunes will blast through the PA systems at Prospect, Woodville, Glenelg and Hamra Homes Ovals this weekend. Spectators are encouraged to come dressed in their coolest 70’s gear to be in the running to win an iPod nano. The prize will be awarded to the best dressed dude or dudette at each of the grounds at three quarter time of the League matches across the weekend.
For a chance to win an electric guitar and amp package, spectators can enter the Savings & Loans Credit Union Air Guitar competition. Keen guitarists will be
lined up at half time of the League matches to jam their way to winning this fantastic prize. So tune up those “guitars” as the best “jammer” on the day will be
awarded the guitar and amp package, courtesy of Savings & Loans Credit Union.

Thanks to Coca-Cola, limited edition 70’s Coca-Cola yoyo’s are available at all Suburban ground kiosks. These are available free of charge with any
Coca-Cola product purchased across the 70’s weekend. Strictly while stocks last.
The West End Girls and Club Mascots will be getting into the 70’s spirit with giveaways for fans. They’ll also be on hand with their guitars and some hot tips for the Savings & Loans Air Guitar competition!!
The SANFL Umpires will also get into the 70’s action. They’ll be dusting off the cob webs and rehashing their uniforms from back in the day. We look forward to welcoming back the trench coats and bowler hats, the groovy white business shirts and good old black socks. The 70’s lives on in SANFL Local
Footy!!
Check out the groovy footy at these groovy ground this weekend:

Saturday 29th July
Central v South - 2:15pm - Hamra Homes Oval
Eagles v West - 2:20pm - Woodville Oval
North v Norwood - 2:20pm - Prospect Oval

Sunday 30th July
Glenelg v Port - 2:20pm - Glenelg Oval

There should have been another game on the Sunday - both the Crows and Power aren't playing on that day.

Initiative is a great thing but does anyone else find this back to the 70s thing pathetic?
I'm suprised they haven't wheeled out Tim Shaw in an afro.
