Port v Glenelg Rd 17 2006

From the Advertiser:

What a time to break a drought

DOUG ROBERTSON

PORT Adelaide hasn't lost to Glenelg in their past 10 encounters and it's no time to weaken when they clash at the Bay on Sunday.
Even the most narrow-minded Port fan would recognise the injury-hit Magpies will need a huge effort to get over the Tigers this time. But Port has built its enduring reputation on similar triumphs against the odds and there's no time like the present to add to the legend.

A finals spot probably hangs on the outcome.

Port will lose fourth place on the ladder on percentage if beaten on Sunday and it still must face Central District, the Eagles and North Adelaide - all higher on the premiership ladder - before the finals.

Glenelg is in a four-week groove which will not only dictate if it reaches the major round for the first time in seven seasons but whether or not it can claim the critical double-chance.

It has sixth-placed Norwood next and the Tigers play North, Central and South Adelaide before the finals so Glenelg must win on Sunday to force its claims. Win this critical game and, provided South upsets the Dogs, Glenelg will take a squatters' grip on third spot.

With tall forward Jeff Smith and rejected Crow Tom Redden coming in, Glenelg has the talent to exploit the Magpies' personnel losses. Young forward/midfielders Lindsay Thomas, Kyle Jenner, Steven Summerton and Peter Mann - with a handful of games between them - were called up with experienced defender Tom Carr. But Clive Waterhouse, Shayne Biacsi (both hamstring), Shane Morrison (thumb), Matt Gates and Mark Dolling are out.

Port is expected to always be hard at it physically but coach Tim Ginever is battling an alarming inconsistency in approach.

"Disappointingly, it's against the better teams - that's a worry," he said.

Port's structure is best with Corey AhChee in defence so Matt Lokan at half-forward and James Meiklejohn at the goalfront must fire to keep it stable.

Ivan Maric smashed North's rucks last week but Port lost by 72 points because of wasted possessions, Ginever said.

"I'm talking about guys who probably three weeks ago couldn't miss a target but (now) they couldn't even execute a drop punt," he said. "That's got to be mental preparation because you don't lose the ability to kick the ball. It's got to be concentration."

This SHOULD be a ripper of a game and I'm looking forward to it.
Unfortunately a lot of Port v Glenelg games in the past have had the mantle of a ripper only for Port to thrash the pants of the Bays, let's hope it changes and at the very least is a good match.
Don't take too much out of Port getting flogged last week. North played as good as footy I've seen at SANFL level for well over a decade last week.

Port have a lot of inexperience in the side now and we are short on options. If Glenelg want to play finals then its a game they should win. If Port want to try and keep up with the top 3 its a game they have to win.

Actually to tell you the truth, it didn't occur to me until a neutral person at the game mentioned it.

I'm not normally one to lay plaudits on North as I prefer to talk down their chances but it was an honest assessment.

we must have a win to be a serious chance of finals and be contenders. Port do have lots of injuries but i hope the boys dont go into it with any complacency at all, as when Port are at there lowest they can strike hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To be honest, not overly confident about this game. Too many key position players out.

game day has arrived, the weather gods are not smiling and the forecast last night was for increasing showers which will make it a good old fashioned slog. An absolute must win for the bays and nearly as important for the 'pies as well given norwoods wins over the past 8 days (didnt see that coming). As i have said history says port but recent form says glenelg, our form against west was patchy, we were too loose for my liking and the week before was great for three and a half quarters, the worrying sign letting south get a sniff but then killing them off with a great finishing blitz - the strangest last 20min of footy i have seen (reminded me of a st v nd at the parade years ago) If we are accountable for 4 qtrs we will win, they have plenty of quality players out and the media have written them off because of that, but i know timmy will have them fired up. Should be a good tight contest (hopefully not for long) WE GOTTA WIN.

Port are shaky, but will shake off Glenelg today.
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

We had one of our best wins in '95 against Port, in the wet and mud at the Bay, to keep our finals hopes alive......

Time for history to repeat itself...
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
