SANFL back to the 70s

Initiative is a great thing but does anyone else find this back to the 70s thing pathetic?
I'm suprised they haven't wheeled out Tim Shaw in an afro.

Yep spot on. If they were serious about it - the league would promote it earlier than it has, have all teams in 70's jumpers and promote back to the 70's football events. By that I mean No air guitars comps, old 70's cars driving around or stupid fancy dress up gear.

Have dress up as "how you used to go to the Football" back then - best duffle coat prizes for example (I would be a fair bet to win that so that's why I 'm suggesting it!). You could have SANFL funded 70's admission prices. You could also have 70's prices for food and drink - SANFL funded also. And to top it off have a quick "fun" game between the competing clubs using their 70's legends in between the Ressies and League. Those sorts of promotions are more likely to bring people back to the SANFL than **** air guitar comps and the like!!!

With the SANFL’s “Living in the 70’s” Theme Round this weekend, the Central District
Football Club are paying tribute to the 70’s by taking to the field in 70’s style guernseys.



The guernsey is a complete replica of the guernsey worn by the Club until 1979 when the white-style
guernsey was introduced. These one-off guernseys will be worn during this Saturday’s Central District v
South Adelaide clash at Hamra Homes Oval, to commemorate the SANFL’s “Living in the 70’s” Theme
Round.
The match-worn guernseys will be auctioned on eBay to raise funds to support the Junior Football
Program in the Northern Community.
This Saturday afternoon also sees North Adelaide take on Norwood at Prospect Oval and the Eagles
clash with West Adelaide at Woodville Oval. Sunday afternoon, Glenelg meet Port Adelaide at Glenelg
Oval in an attempt to remain in finals contention.

I posted this on the footysa. forums looking for some discussion and opinion and got nothing.

I tend to agree.

Whilst on the point, I think it is absolutely ridiculous that the SANFL are holding a back to the 70's round yet Sturt, one of the clubs that dominated the era (Premiers in 70,74,76) have the bye, yet we have WWT, who weren't even a twinkle in Bill Sanders' eye, taking part.

Before the hybrids get all antsy, you lot have said yourselves you are one club, formed in 1991.

What are the SANFL playing at?

Could have perhaps arranged the round between grand finalists of that era and would have no problems if the Eagles had the bye on that basis.

Could have had the round fixtured as one of the rounds that has 3 teams with the bye:

Replay 1979 GF
Port vs South at Alberton

Replay 1978 GF
Norwood vs Sturt

Replay 1973 GF
Glenelg vs North

Bye: West, Eagles and Central

Although I think this round is more like a themed New Years Eve party as opposed to looking back at the football of the 70's.

I just felt with the format they are using with one club having the mandatory bye, then the Eagles would be the most logical solution.

I never mean't in any way to diminish the history of both Woodville and West Torrens footy club's.

I think it should have been deferred a year and done "right" as opposed to a haphazard affair it appears it will be.

SANFL Senior Umpires will this week join the theme of 'Living in the 70's'.

Field and Boundary Umpires will revisit the days of Murray Ducker, Peter Mead and Vin Camporeale, happily parading around with tight shorts, rolled up sleeves and painted white shoes.

Who can forget the days of the Old Dust Coats worn by Charlie Britton and Mostyn Rutter in the Goals. They make a comeback along with Bowls Hat. If you look closely enough you may even notice a number of Goal Umpires with facial hair this weekend.

Be sure to watch for an Old Fashioned Signal or two.



Hopefully the Advertiser gets into the spirit by giving the SANFL the coverage it deserves this weekend and giving the VFL the same 1 paragraph they used to get in the 70s!

The umpires uniforms have bothered me ever since they started to modify them. Why are Goal umpires wearing baseball caps? At least the SANFL still have umpires in white. Umpires should wear white and shouldn't have numbers. Goal umpires should have the coat and shirt and tie as well as the bowls hat. How much better did they look last week in the AFL 80's round.

By far the worst excess of guernsey space given over to advertising was done by $trut in their dark years. The patch for Sanctuary Cove (or whatever the hell it was - some nature resort up in Queensland) was enormous and its variegated colour detracted big-time from the guernsey.
