MARTYN Crook, the coach of Australian U17 Joeys soccer side, has died of a suspected heart attack.

Crook was in Lancaster, California, preparing the Joeys for an internation junior tournment,w with the first match scheduled against the USA this morning (AEDT).

As a goalkeeper Crook represented Australia and played for West Adelaide in the National Soccer League between 1977 and 1986 before being involved in coaching roles with juniors and South Australian Sports Institute.

His contribution to SA soccer over 40 years were recognised in 2006 when he was inducted into the Football Federation of South Australia (FFSA( Hall of Fame.


In a statement the FFSA today expressed it deepest sympathy to all Crook's family and friends.

"Aside from his footballing achievements, Martyn Crook was a great bloke who was widely respected by all," the FFSA said.

"He has touched many thousands of South Australians over the years and will be greatly missed by all.

Crikey, that's sad, I remember seeing him play many games for West Adelaide.
