North v Norwood Rd 17 2006

All discussions to do with the SANFL

Postby drebin » Sun Jul 30, 2006 1:26 pm

I saw only 2 bad decisions against North yesterday but equally saw a couple that should have been paid to Norwood that were not but in the end the umpiring had nothing to do with why North lost.

Norwood came to play with good intensity, they were under sized but won all the key match ups with their defence against out taller forward line. Perrie was crap and didn't help our cause (not the AFL Ian - you have to earn your kicks). Chase your man too Perrie? - how many times did Lower run off him and marked in the last line helping out Jackman and Zorzi. Twice when Hargy got in front he marked - the rest of the time he played from behind and got killed. Poor delivery into the forwards didn't help but I think our midfield lost confidence in Hargraves and Perrie very early in the game because they were beaten and made no effort to try and change their approach.

Maybe some coaching move earleir may have worked but doubt that would have worked as the 3 Norwood defenders played very well on bigger and more fancied opponents all day.

It is very frustrating seeing Alleway, Perrie and Hargaves all going for the same contest on occasions yesterday and on one occasion Gill was also flying with the other 3 talls? 4 talls flying for a mark - dumb football and Norwood were disciplined to spoil or create a good contest and were able to run the ball out easily.

Norwood's delivery to their fwds was great all day and even when it was greasy the Norwood players all over the ground marked very well - it showed that they wanted it and if not for some poor finishing could have really "stiched" North yesterday. Well done Norwood and hopefully a lesson learnt for North. Still only can we be rated the 3rd best side in the comp as I have said all year.

Rik E Boy wrote:Quality posts and attitude Drebin and Wedgie. I'm not sure about any six goal advantage yesterday though..true, I wasn't as close to the action as you blokes but throughout that second half it seemed North were very much on top and I could almost sense the doubt in the Redlegs. Perrie started to get his hands on the pill in the second half and Gill came on late and grabbed some key marks. What happened to him? Was he injured?

If the Legs can make the five this season I will try and get down to the Oval as I miss my SANFL. I would love to have a beer or three with Booney and watch the Legs boot Port out of the finals....but we've got to get there first!

Cheers,

REB

Gill had a corky that's why he sat for 2 quarters on the bike. A number of "The Roost" users were angry he was off but it was obvious he was injured otherwise he would have been on the ground - as witnessed by his last quarter effort. Still we had 3 other talls so no excuse for him being off the ground - it was time for the others to stand up especially the two lazy "pouters" whose numbers follow each other!

Never said it did have anything to do with me mate, some of us obviously just put higher priorities on our footy clubs.

A little harsh Wedgie. I would be surprised if there was anyone else in Australia that follow their club with as much passion from overseas as Jimmy whether that be AFL, NRL, SANFL etc. I'm sure you'd put family first as well as Jimmy obviously has.

Totally agree. I have known of Jimmy for nearly two footy seasons and his passion for Sturt is almost unrivalled. Whether he's in the States or at Unley he lives and breathes Sturt, and I think it's fantastic.

I agree too BUT I might be an exception to the rule and judge others against myself.
I wouldn't let my life dictate me being overseas or interstate and missing North Adelaide games every week.
I know I"m a full on fanatic but its just the way I am.
I haven't had offers to work overseas but I've had offers to work interstate and its not as though Adelaide is Beirut. IMHO its the best city in the world to bring up a family and even if 10 - 50 k extra was offered to me to work somewhere else I wouldn't even consider it.
How hard is it to get a great livelihood in Adelaide and set up in a nice area to bring up a family in a good atmosphere?

Harsh?
maybe but hey, obviously some of us love our clubs more than others.
Just my opinion though, and let's face it, the different levels in fanatacism by various supportes if probably one of the reasons (and maybe main reason) some clubs are where they are today.

I'll beg to disagree, when a team on similar points wins an unexpected big win I would think it would impact on you big time.

Only 4 or 5 days ago I said my calculations had Norwood, Glenelg and South all on the same amount of wins with % between them for 5th spot.
I would think an extra win to Norwood in that sort of estimation would be a huge "affect" to Glenelg. Common sense surely?? :?

I was saving this until tonight so I didn't sound like a smartarse last night (yeah. I know some of you thnk when don't I)

Prior to this round my guestimation had us finishing one game ahead of Norwood, based on South winning at Carlunga and us beating Norwood at West End stadium. Yesterday's result threw a big spanner in the works so on my guestimation yesterday's result left us even on wins after rd 23 but us ahead on %age.

Well todays result has us finishing one game ahead on my guestimation prior to this week as we have both pinched a game I hadn't factored on.

Do I believe my predictions will turn out that way in the end, Nup, becuase as I have been saying all year and as results have demonstrated all year there will be some results over the next few weeks that will leave everyone scratching their heads....

E.g. don't discount Sturt throwing a few spanners in the works.....

However, I will make this prediction the winner of the Glenelg v Norwood game this week will be virtually home and hosed. ATM it is an even money bet Glenelg probably playing the better footy but it is being played on Norwoods dunghill where they are notoriously hard to beat, especially for us....

however based on Port's effort over the past two weeks, I reckon both Norwood and us will make it, and the Legs should feel confident as they have beaten us in the last 3 knock-out finals we have played.... :Hangman:
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I can fully understand what you are saying Wedgie. I wouldn't leave Adelaide as i couldn't imagine winters without North. I have travelled a fair bit and found places i'd like to live but i'd only go if North came as well  That's just me. Doesn't matter though. I've just built a house and will be here for a fair while yet. I've missed 11 games since i started attending games as a seven year old in 1987 and don't plan on missing any more. I even felt guilty missing the game against South at Adelaide Oval in 1994 the day after my grandfather (who took me to games every week) passed away. He would have wanted me to go.

Not everyone is like that though and the attitude we have isn't neccessarily right for eveyone.

no, your just coming back to the pack.... 8)

stop blaming the umps rooter fans!!!

as your other fans have said, looks like you got done by a better side, playing better footy...

dont worry, IMO, its just a hiccup and you'll be back, favs for the gf. Seriously.

Umm Jimmy, CENTURION is not a North fan!
Sigh.

yeah, i quoted centurion as my first sentence was aimed at him....i should have noted that the rest was at north fans...my bad, thought you would have used commonsense...

I did use common sense mate, but you quote Centurion and then say "as your other fans have said".

So you quote a Central fan, tell Rooster fans to stop blaming the umpiring and then proceed to say that "as your other fans have said, looks like you got done by a better side, playing better footy..."
Makes no sense to me.

Mate, there's a big difference between common sense and no sense and your post my friend makes no sense.

I love the Redlegs and I love SA but here I am in Qld. If I had stayed in Adelaide I honestly believe that I would spend the rest of my life travelling in ever diminishing circles. My career was going nowhere and I had a mountain of debt and my better half could not gain consistent employment. As much as I love the Redlegs, I just wouldn't want to risk my children's future just to watch a football team.

I now own my own house, the trouble and strife is in full time employment and the kids love it up here and my debts have reduced in a big way. I believe I made the right decision just as Wedgie and Jimmy also believe they have made the right decisons in thier lives. Just be thankful that we are not all the same because if we were there wouldn't a league to follow in the first place.

Cheers boys,

Its a different life over here and the opportunity door is so wide open its not **** funny.

I still get my LIVE footy fix each weekend playing for the Trash and the NY Magpies. And even get to hang out with Ben Graham and the NY Jets.

But you CANT beat ADELAIDE. LOVE IT!!! and will return when the time is right, maybe then, i can buy the SFC :P

Any chance of getting Benny to come home to Geelong there James? You'd just have to tell him to get belted every week, cop shit from Goldspink, get paid farg all, get booed by his own fans just so his team can miss or fail in the finals? Hmm, maybe not!

Norwood more than deserved the win on Saturday. North were decidedly lax all day, were 2nd to the ball throughout (beside from maybe the 2nd half of the last quarter) & insisted on playing a handball-happy game out of defence, which more often than not led to turnovers. Norwood adopted a more simple game plan of simply putting boot to ball which given the inclement conditions was by far the better way of going about things. For most of the match they had loose men everywhere.

It was still great to see a game of local SANFL footy in the company of the North Grogs. You could stand without anyone tell you off. You could drink bourbon out of a can. You could say "**** off you cnut umpire!" & not have security want to chuck you out! Yes, the pace was definitely a step slower than AFL level, but even on a wet day there was not the level of ball-ups & players diving on the ball in a pack situation. Not once did I see Norwood try and chip the ball around to defend their lead. Nor did I see North do the same to stop Norwood's momentum when they were controlling the game in the 2nd & 3rd quarters. you can say that in modern-day AFL parlance the footy I was watching was a tad nieve. I won't. I'll just call it good honest attractive attacking footy. Footy that has not changed horribly much over the years. Footy that is still more or less the game you watched when you were little tackers growing up. For that alone it must be protected & preserved! 8)

I hope the Swans are over there again in a final again. Would love to get to see North Adelaide going around once again! 8)

cheers from sunny Sydney!
