Easy explanation why but James deserves just as much fanfare

Postby spell_check » Mon Jul 31, 2006 2:01 pm

What bugs me is that Brett James has not got nowhere near the hype or fanfare as Gavin Wanganeen.

They both played in two AFL premierships and one SANFL premiership.

Both have played over 300 games in the SANFL and AFL combined.

Both have captained sides that they were in.

Both have played state footy.

But of course for two possibly three reasons, Wanganeen gets two page spreads, a lavish testimonial dinner and now a portrait of him in todays newspaper.

Perhaps this thread can pay more of a tribute/recognition to another fine player in Collingwood/Crows and Norwood star Brett James.

That's life. Some players are media darlings and the others just have to struggle. It has been going on ever since I started watching footy.

Easy answer really...

Gav played 300 AFL games

Gav is the first indigineous player to reach that milestone

Gav has a brownlow

Gav has been a proven performer throughout his distinguished career

Gav captained his AFL side

Gav played state footy when people still cared about it

If i've missed anything, feel free to add on...

The fact that some players are brilliant (Wanganeen) and others are just good (James) has a lot to do with it as well.

Perhaps Brett does not deserve the same recognition as Gav but probably does does additional recognition of what has been a fine football career to date. Brett James is no Wangas but is a Redleg legend.

James has been an excellent servant of football for many a year. By large he is underrated, always has been.

But, in my opinion, you cant compare 300 AFL games to 300 SANFL games.

Gav is the first Aboriginal footballer to reach the 300 AFL game milestone, won a Brownlow (1 vote away from two), Club BnF, mulitple All Australian and club captain.

It is no surprise that he has been given more fanfare than James and in my opinion, so he should.

I have always thought Brett has an amazing ability to find the footy, but overused the handball a bit. Given the stats of the game on the weekend between Crows and West Coast (more handballs than kicks for the first time in an AFL match) perhaps he was just ahead of his time?

Anyone that plays 300 senior games at either SANFL or AFL level deserves a lot of credit IMHO.
