What age were you when you first......

What age were you when you first......

Postby hearts on fire » Wed Dec 17, 2008 5:51 pm

Got a job and started working?

I do not work at the moment, but i will probably be getting a job in the next six months.

So by the time I start working, i will be sixteen.

How old were you when you got your first job?

After school I was 15 ( my kids have been spared by their mum ) at coles
I did get an apprenticeship that lasted a few months as I was not suitable .
Then I spent from 18 to 31 as a automotive paint sales assitant.
Then the next 14 yrs 31 until now as a storeperson/process wroker.

My advice study hard and get a good job otherwise you'll get shit work like me .And after 14 yrs I still get the jobs that the boy can do .While the boy watches ;)

I was 17 and already had a date to join the RAF so got my exams out the way, left at Easter and did voluntary work full time (had been doing it part time throughout the 6th form) until the end of July. Then that was me for the next 23 years :D

My very, very, very first job was 'apricot cutting' in Waikerie when I was 16 years old, it was during the christmas holidays between school and I went up there and stayed with my aunty.
I remember earning something like $600 in 5 weeks and was ecstatic !!!

Because I lived in a small country town there wasn't much more going than baby-sitting.

I did work experience as a receptionist in a radio station when I was 17 and in year 12.
In November of the same year the radio station called me up and asked if I'd like the receptionist job as the current receptionist was leaving. I was stoked.

Spent 12 months there before applying for a bank job and then spending the next 17 years with the same bank (Between kids..lol) moving between Adelaide and Ayers Rock.

Banking began to suck...lol... and became more of a 'pushy' sales job so I hated it.
Got the opportunity via my sister-in-law to do the typing from home that I currently do and have been doing that for 8 years.
Love it !!

In between my husband and I owned a window cleaning business and so did some window cleaning as well.

O:)

Yes, when i get my first job, i will NEVER work in a fast food place.

Supermarkets are not bad, it's pretty ideal for me because i live down the road from one.

I will just wait and see what happens.

I was 18 and just finished school. Went to work at the ABB Grain Silos in my local area. (They were called Ausbulk then) along with most of my mates. I was assigned to be a 'block head' where it was my job to sit at the top of those massive concrete structures you see at most sites and change over the conveyor belt when each variety of grain came in. As our cells were flat bottomed we also had to sweep them out when they wanted to empty it. Extremely hard work almost waist deep in grain, boots full of grain and trying to position a huge sweeper is not easy.

Hated pulling tarps for the bunker crews knee deep in grain pulling a tarp over the whole lot

Should try to start earning some money before you need it mate ... I was always slack in that department mate and whilst it doesnt keep me awake at night, I'd do things a little differently if I had the DeLorean

I would have bought a lot of very cheap real estate back in the day if I had the chance .
That way I could be retired and living off my investments  instead of working all day ;)

Thats a fair point CP..... if a good opportunity comes along, i'll definitely take it but i don't want to get stuck with a job that is boring and has no interest at all.

I know working isn't supposed to be fun and games, but i want to find something thats worth while.

I was 12. Sold the "News" in front of the old Caltex (now Ambo Station) on Old Belair Rd. Did that for 1.5 years.
Then got a job at Shelleys Softdrinks cleaning bottles, lasted 6 months, then onto BIG W for 3 years collecting
trolleys, sweeping floors and generally being a pain in the arse, then got my first FULLTIME job at 17 with
Australian Airlines. Worked for them and their freight arm Australian air Express for 17 years.

Quit last year to be a stay at home dad. Have been working casual for Travelex the past 4 months......
The joy of being on the hill drinking beer cannot be understated

I remember telling my old man when I was about 17 "Dad, I don't know what I'd be good at, let alone what I'd like to do"

The response "Well son, there's nothing that pays you for drinking, smoking and rooting!"

Got the point across pretty well.

Ha ha, I've been a bunker rat too. Don't worry, they're not allowed to pull tarps over the bunkers anymore there is a buggy for that. 90 hour weeks sucked too.
