Was 14 when I landed my first job pushing trolleys around in the carpark at Marion Shops. In retrospect that job sucked. Supermarket management was full of @rseholes who were nobodies in all facets of their pitiful lives and would seek to give their petty existences meaning by lording it over the menial workers. Not that I realised this at the time. I was as happy as a pig in mud, I was getting four whole dollars an hour - and an extra dollar in penalties on weekends!

That first job lasted 7 months. In between that point and graduation from Uni, I made money via:
- various occasional stocktaking work
- selling my body to science. Mostly psychology research projects.
- grilling burgers at HJ's. That was an educational experience, for reasons which were completely tangential to the actual work.
- high school maths tuition
- Uni level computer science tuition. Had 3 regular gigs with proper employers over a 2 year period.

Got my first proper job after graduation at age 20. Began as a programmer, after some years ended up as a research worker.
Clowns OUT. Smears OUT. RESIST THE OCCUPATION.

Yes, when i get my first job, i will NEVER work in a fast food place.

Supermarkets are not bad, it's pretty ideal for me because i live down the road from one.

I will just wait and see what happens.

It depends what you want to do later in life.

I started at 14 picking fruit.
I worked in a supermarket for 6 years while at school and university, which gave me great management experience (after 4 years) and references on my CV.

I wouldn't write off the fast food joints. I know it probably sucks working there when you start out, but they'll teach you the worlds best business systems. I'm currently researching and developing a business plan for an outlet that will require a flawless, efficient service system to be successful. Therefore, the supermarket experience can only really be applied to the ordering and inventory tracking side of my plan. However, if I'd had Maccas, HJ, KFC type experience, I'd have learned the worlds greatest fast food business system straight up, without now having to hang around these types of place looking like a dodgy stalker and take pics of the keys aspects of their system.

Jeez I'm a loser.

Got my first job at 16 working at the local Petrol Station for a couple of years while finishing High School.

Didn't get into the Uni course I wanted so I bummed around for 6 months then got a job doing gardening and maintenace for 6 months.

Then worked as a Fruit and Veg Assistant at Woolies Elizabeth before progressing to Assistant Produce Manager for a couple of years.

Then got an Admin Traineeship with an Aluminium Wholesaler called Ullrich Aluminium spending 7 years there working my way up to Sales Rep.

Am now an Account Manager for another Aluminium wholesaler and been so for the last 18 months but really wanting a change in career at the moment.

Would love to get into the Media full time or be a Sports Journalist but can't afford to do it financially or time wise in terms of study.

yes, i have heard a bit from other people about the mining industry, but what i don't know is, how do you get into it? and this may sound like a dumb question, but what work do you do up there? obviously mining but what type of mining and that. By the sounds of things, it's pretty tough work, but the more you do it, the more you would be able to cope. Money is the main thing, if the money is good, i would have the hunger for it.

HoF, this is the link to the Wiki page on mining in Australia. You might find that some of the links to individual mining areas etc will give you some of the mining company websites and that might give you the info on the work involved and how to get into it. If nothing else it's a starting point.

15 years old, weekend nights working as a glass boy in a pub. Good money for a teenager and a great way to meet drunken 18-19 year old girls, albeit that I had no idea what to do with a drunken woman coming on to a teenager.
Uni - night cleaner at a school. Four hours of vacuuming. Mind numbing but very good pay as it paid for everything and left spending money still. Wish they had ipods back then though to fill in the time.
