yes, i have heard a bit from other people about the mining industry, but what i don't know is, how do you get into it? and this may sound like a dumb question, but what work do you do up there? obviously mining but what type of mining and that. By the sounds of things, it's pretty tough work, but the more you do it, the more you would be able to cope. Money is the main thing, if the money is good, i would have the hunger for it.

i don't really know but i know there are different type of jobs up there including riggers, truck/cranes

how to get into it, this is only a suggestion but look it up on the net & go from there, i do know a bloke who has worked up there (both roxby & at kalgoorlie & some other place in western aust) i'll ask him tomorrow & let you know tomorrow night , the money is huge, if i was 20-25 years younger i'd be doing it

Cheers bayman, it sounds like a good option, i've had a few people mention it to me before, but not to this extent.

Any information you get, is a huge help, thanks.

Thanks, this stuff could really come in handy, because school starts getting a bit more serious next year and i want to start having an idea of what i want to do and that. :)

Mate, ya kinda need to find the importance of it yourself (like anything in life, you can't do it because someone said so), but trust me next year is important, it can put you well ahead in life or well behind, give it a decent crack bud!!

Do what YOU want to do. No point in going to mining if you don't want to do it.

I wanted to be a travel agent, and hence when I left TAFE I got a job with Australian Airlines & then onto affiliated industries.

If you love sport, do a sports marketing course or get a job for a footy club. I have a good mate who works for the Crows as he loves footy
and marketing and hence he now works in the membership department.

Once I'm ready to work full time again, I want to go into the sports area, so will concentrate my energies to that (thankfully not for another 8 or 9 years).

Thats true, there is so many different jobs and that out there, thats why i want to try and look into as many as possible. It's really hard at this age, to decide what you want to do, because there is so much i haven't tried.

Next year there is alot more "outside" of school work, like going to Tafe and that, hopefully this can narrow my horizons and give me a fair idea of what to do.

Thanks CP, I'll give it my best shot and hopefully i end up with the goods.

I don't really know what to do at this stage, i know i like to get outdoors and I am pretty good with my hands and that ;)

It really is hard to say because i haven't tried much, but next year we are getting into the Tafe side of things, so hopefully that will sort out things.

At the moment, i am just going to explore all avenues, try and give what i can a shot and do what i want to do.

RE: All the suggestions to chase the coin in mining, I currently work in the mining industry and over the last 6 months the proverbial has hit the fan BIG TIME. The silly money will dry up soon enough as the price of most base metals has fallen by 2/3rds due to the slowdown in the US, Europe and China.

Take Rio Tinto. Just cut 14,000 workers. The company is straining under the load of their debt, which could force them to sell key assets at fire sale prices.

Employees are the biggest expense in 95%+ of businesses, so it's one of the first areas to be considered for cutbacks when tough times hit. Mining is no exception - my company has just laid off '000's.

Hopefully, rather than encouraging him, I was pointing him in the right direction to get the info to make an informed choice.

If we're making suggestions then I'd say he could do a lot worse than consider the military. I'm sure yours is similar to ours so they can train him for a trade, cloth/feed/house and pay him and he could leave whilst still young enough to take up a new career as a civilian. And there's much less chance of being made redundant etc in the next few years whilst the civilian workforce is struggling with the current ecconomic problems and what will no doubt be a very slow recovery.

At 14 I started working on a farm during school holidays, did the occasional shift pumping petrol from 15 as well, did both until I started my apprentiship at 17.

My son is 14 1/2, started as a kitchen hand / waiter 3 weeks ago.

First job was at 14 collecting plates at the Buckingham Arms, can't remember the pay rate but do remember the nice $500 tax refund I got that year which bought my year 10 formal dress and some nice accessories to boot :D

Also worked with my uncle at state print during the school holidays doing photocopying, collating and printing.

First actual job was as a swimming instructor for State Swim when I was about 17/18. A pretty good gig, kids can be great fun, but some can be a real pain.

My first job was at 8 selling fireworks from the Dry Cleaners opposite the school. Used to go over at lunch time and after school. I became pretty popular over that month and did it for a number of years. I think the payment was in crackers so that was excellent, I don’t think the whole business was to legal and whenever the Big Boys turned up wanting the BIG stuff I would have to get the boss to handle that.

Also on Bunkers I to worked at SACBH the predecessor to Ausbulk and I was actually the Bean Counter responsible for the change from silos and sheds to bunkers because of the NPV calculations. At least until a Terminal Manager took me out to a site once where they were trying to put the covers on in 50kmph winds, they are big sails. :( Had to factor Workcover costs into the calculations then, hence the Big Sheds after that.

I too can vouch for the military, pushed trolleys for Target at TTP while in year 11 and 12, didnt do as well as I would have liked, went for on job interview, didnt get it then decided to join the Army on the advice of a girlfriends dad, loved it so much that I stayed for over 21 years and still work for the firm now as a civvy, great life and great mates and got to travel overseas a bit as well, Hawaii, East Timor, Morocco and a few other places at tax payers expense 8)
