It was a great series and I can't wait for the three Test series in South Africa next month. Piss all these limited overs games off coming up to finish our summer.

Yeah it is rubbish that we now have limited overs matches coming up. A whole stack of them too, there are far too many of these games when I would love to see another Test or 2...

I think NFC is getting at what Gilchrist had said that it was after dropping a catch that he realised he had to retire because he wasn't concentrating the whole day which is required and i think that is a part of the game that Hayden is also no longer capable of doing.

Absolutely, perfectly timed declaration. If McGrath and Warne were in the side he could have batted longer but the attack he had needed the extra time to bowl the opposition out. Having said that if McGrath and Warne were in the side it would have been a non issue as the South Africans would not have made anywhere near what they did in the first dig.

history will say his timing was perfect.
however, it nearly wasn't due to dropped catches...

Quite remarkable how the 3 tests went
first test we played 4 bowlers and an injured symonds [lose]
second test we played 4 bowlers and an injured symonds, down to 3 bowlers in the second innings when Lee was injured [lose]
third test we played 5 fit bowlers [win]

therefore the knockers of Mcdonald and the purists who demanded 6 batters a keeper and 4 bowlers can now rethink thier views on how test teams are selected in the future
Mcdonald did a job and showed up the previous crippled allrounders

as for selections for the 20-20 games, most of the battle weary test players need to be rested and we must pick younger domestic sloggers who are hardened 20-20 players from the bigbash comp, players like Warner and Blizzard must play before Hayden and Katich

Exactly right. There is no point picking cricketers to play in the slog fest. Leave 20/20 to the rubbish players with no technique.

For the 20-20 team Daniel Harris would have to be in the mix. I think you have to reward good domestic form and on form he would have to be one of the best 20-20 batsmen in the country at the moment.

We would have won the series 3-0 (even at their current age). It was a great declaration by Punter but some people are pretty quick to turn against him and the Aussies... yet they are equally as quick to jump back on the wagon. He has made a few mistakes this series but his timing for the declaration was perfect.

the pitch was perfect, a result in the last 2 overs of the test match, and 14 wickets in the last 2 days, not sure what more RR and R&B wanted? As my mum always said, looks arent everything..

IMO Siddle, McDonals, Bollinger clearly showed they are not fit enough to play 5 day cricket yet, all of them really sturggled with their pace today....fair enough as Im guessing all three wouldnt have thought they would be playing test cricket this summer and probably didnt put the work in thats required.....2 of them will put the work in now, Bollinger wont have to bother! :D

A fit Smith and SA would have won, I really hope their aint much back slapping in the Aussie camp tonight

Yep, I was wrong about the declaration. Good to see us get up and hopefully it bodes well for both the ODIs and second test series. :)

Dutchy, with the greatest respect, that was a crap pitch and the pitch had nothing to do with the fact there was a result.

For one thing, it was a dangerous pitch. I don't think I've seen as many batsmen hit in the head in one game ever. I've rarely seen 4 wides from a ball pitched on the stumps. Balls 'took off' regularly and kept low regularly. It was way too slow from day 1. The quicks looked pedestrian most of the time, but looked lethal if the ball hit a crack or rolled along the ground. Even the curator said he got it wrong.

After the declaration, the game was always likely to be decided late on day 5. That was due to the state of the game that far, not the deck.

You've played enough cricket to recognise a bad deck when you see one. I think Boucher said it was in the worst 3 pitches he'd ever played on and I understand that completely.

I dont really care if its dangerous, facts are it didnt yield the wickets you claimed it would.

I care about tests that go into the last session, not decided over 3 days like some green tops, know which match Id rather watch or be involved in
