Your All-Time Favourite Team

Postby whufc » Wed Jan 07, 2009 7:59 pm

The ponting, lara, tendulkar thread got me thinking what would be your all time favourite test team if you could select eleven guys to play for your own team.

Doesn't have to be the best team or most balanced team but instead your favourite cricketers. One rule they had to have played in your time of viewing cricket so you can't include W.G.Grace

1. Sachin Tendulkar
2. Saneth Jayasuriya
3. Richie Richardson
4. Brian Lara
5. Viv Richards
6. Ricky Ponting
7. Adam Gilchrist
8. Wasim Akram
9. Shane Warne
10. Merv Hughes
11. Curtly Ambrose

1. S. Tendulkar (Ind)
2. M. Taylor (Aus)
3. R. Ponting (Aus)
4. VVS Laxman (Ind)
5. B. Lara (WI)
6. J. Kallis (RSA)
7. A. Gilchrist WK (Aus)
8. S. Warne (Aus)
9. M. Marshall (WI)
10. W. Akram (Pak)
11. G. McGrath (Aus)
12th C Cairns (NZ)

this team could change everytime I look at it, but for 3 positions- Warne, McGrath & Gilchrist

Great thread.

1. M. Hayden
2. D. Haynes
3. D. Gower
4. B. Lara
5. S. Waugh (c)
6. S. Chanderpaul
7. I. Healy
8. W. Akram
9. S. Warne
10. M. Holding
11. G McGrath

That is just a quick list off the top of my head. If i think about it a bit longer it might change a bit. Hardest thing was Gilchrist or Healy but i picked Healy purely because i believe in picking the best keeper and if they can bat it's a bonus. Healy is the best keeper i've seen so i had to go with him. Gilchrist is a better cricketer though.

Glad i'm not the only one. The guy was as good at keeping as Warne was at bowling leg breaks IMHO.

Not bad a side with the inclusion of two Sandgropers and a Victorian....

Can't believe Rick Darling didn't get a gig...

1. Matthew Hayden
2. Justin Langer
3. Brian Lara
4. Shivnarine Chanderpaul - he always seems to end up not out
5. Darren Lehmann
6. Adam Gilchrist (why not have him in there as a batsman only) ;)
7. Ian Healy
8. Shane Warne
9. Jason Gillespie
10. Andy Bichel
11. Shaun Tait

12. Darren Gough - there was a quote which I cannot recall who made it, but this person was asked out of the current (at the time) English side, who they would like in their side and the reply was "None, but I'd pick Darren Gough to be the 12th man"

I thought about that as well. Good call.

Just having a think about my initial side i have to say Graham Smith would be very very close to getting a gig. If i was selecting a side to play for my life he would be in it for sure.

Smith wouldn't be too far away from my side as well; Shahid Afridi would come into it for one dayers; Tim May is another I could have put in there, too.

I had to put two teams down, one is my opinion of a near best side of my lifespan, and the bottom would be my favourite test side.

Tendulkar
Hayden
Ponting
Lara
S.Waugh (c)
Kallis
Gilchrist (wk)
Akram
Warne
McGrath
Muralidarin
12th Ambrose
With the inclusion of Kallis and Akram the batting is quite strong as well as having genuine good medium-quicks. The side might lack a bit of genuine pace though. so include Ambrose as the 12th man. Spin bowling, the records speak for themselves.

Favourite:

Hayden
Tendulkar
Lara
Dean Jones
Lehmann
S.Waugh
Gilchrist
Warne
Lee
Gillespie
McGrath
12th Blewett
