When will this happen ?

Postby panther » Thu Jan 22, 2009 8:00 am

This is a fictitious post that could happen one day in cricket

Here is a newspaper report to dramatise the scenario

49.3 overs were bowled in the Australia versus South Africa 50 over match.
South Africa chasing 299 are 5/282 and needing 18 runs off 3 balls to win the match.
Jaques Kallis who came in with the score at 2/0 is 125 not out off 150 balls including 1 four 2 twos and 117 singles and was facing with 3 balls left.
Kallis who had played splendidly to this point was tired and in the previous 2 balls played 2 slogs that trickled to the fielders in the circle for no runs.
Kallis knelt down and appeared in a nauseous state, a few seconds later Kallis tells the umpires he is ill and is retiring hurt, the incoming batsman is Alby Morkel.
Morkel hits the next 3 balls out of the ground and South Africa win the match.

When will something similar to this happen in a limited overs match ?[or even a Test Match]
When will a struggling batsman retire hurt at any stage of a game to allow a big hitter to come in ?

When will this happen ?

I lie awake at nights worrying about this. Perhaps Barrack Obama has a solution.

We saw it to an extent nigh on 12 years ago but rather than calling for a Batsman who can hit Ranatunga claimed "injury/fatigue" and called for a runner instead....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

From the captain's perspective:

You do it to avoid a ODI loss that would have quickly been forgotten by everyone

Yet you would end up spending the rest of your life trying to make everyone forgot about what you did

Ask Greg Chappell

He then went to NZ with the crowds wanting to tear him a new one but by the end of the tour he played so well he came up smelling like Roses. Greggy won em over. What a batsman.

The commentators posed this question in one of the limited overs games last week, possibly the first one.
In fact, I think that scenario could actually be based on the first two games of this series.

Interestingly, in last night's Big Bash game Brad Hodge had a runner, with about 20 runs needed, his runner (Blizzard) retired and another one (McDonald) replaced him.
Blizzard had hurt his leg but maybe he was just tired from all the running....

Another rule on cricket technicalities:

If the bails are knocked off and someone wants to run a batsman out, we all know that the man at the stumps has to take the ball and touch the stump as it is pulled out of the ground.

What happens if a keeper keeping up to the stumps knocks a bail off middle and off stumps as the ball is being delivered, the batsman misses the delivery and the off stump is knocked out of the ground - is it out or not?

whilst we are talking about substitutes last night whenhodge pulled hammy blizzard came on and ran for him - then after a while blizzard appeared to geta bit tired so they replaced him with mcdonald- surely you cant change runners if the one you are using gets tired
