Programming for this weekends matches

Postby spell_check » Tue Aug 15, 2006 11:39 pm

In 1991, when the Crows played interstate on the Saturday, all four matches were played on the Sunday.

I know that one must be on ABC on the Saturday now, so why didn't the SANFL have two or three matches on the Sunday this weekend instead of just one?

Especially with the success of Sunday's down at the Bay this year. You would've thought they could have changed this game in particular to a Sunday and had another game on tv. I reakon if it was on a Sunday they could've got over 6000. Hopefully a big crowd will turn up anyway.

Yeah last time North and Glenelg played at the Bay it was on a Sunday and the crowd was huge. It created an awesome atmosphere.

It should be high on the SANFL's adgenda during the offseason. More games outside of the traditional starting slot would be fantastic. It's been a great year and this one thing may keep the momentum going into 2007. Too many people can't attend because of their own football commitments.

Screw that for a game of soldiers. Some of us like our footy on a Sat'dy arvo. The time when footy was meant to be played.

Excellent point Spell_Check.
The SANFL going head to head with the Crows live on TV is going to cost attendances and revenue for the clubs - sad but true
SANFL needs to lift its game with programming

Port games have clashed with Crow home games a couple of times this year and it really does effect the crowd figure a hell of a lot.

hangovers

Postby bayman » Wed Aug 16, 2006 8:22 pm

with the premiership/hall of fame dinner on saturday night there would be too many sore heads to make it on sunday, i think with the parade of past players etc there will be a big crowd on saturday anyway plus the fact we are winning will bring out a few more as well, but apart from that event i think it would normally be moved as i think you'll find that glenelg are going to ask for sunday home games next year as more people seem to attend, just like more attend norwood on a friday than on a saturday
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

I do agree that Saturday afternoon should be the starting point to schedule games, but if the Crows or Power play at this time slot, as many games as possible should be programmed away from it. I plan to have a whole big rant about what should be done next year with the draw, including scheduling as many night games at Norwood, Elizabeth and Adelaide in the first 8 or 9 rounds.

pafc1870 - I think it does impact on crowds at Alberton. Perhaps not Port supporters but opposition supporters attendances.

I must say that the weekend before last when Norwood played Glenelg the weather was sensational. The best weather all season for playing and watching footy. No wind. Sunshine. People buying hats instead of beanies! The Crows played that night against Collingwood and the Power the next day. Unfortunately the crowd was Shi_house and there were really no excuses other than this game was the TV game on ABC.

Moral of the story? The programming clashes are problematic but even when there aren't clashes with the Crows/Power games, sometimes the crowds still dont turn up!

Keep SaNFL on Saturdays, **** Sunday footy Bays get too many Sunday games already. If the Crows or Power are worried they will lose attendees to their games why dont they get games schedules for Monday nights.
