Emerson no offence taken it wouldnt be one of the leagues better oval/facilities. Things are getting a little bit rougher at dolphin park the clipsal rapes us we loose our oval from mid march till rd 4. Plus the council, thats another story.

But you love the little things about your own oval and you forget about the bad points. Nothing better than the old boys at the scoreboard bar or walking up the steps at dolphin park a winner after a hard fought game.

What are some of the good points of your home ground posters?

I reckon Pooraka has to be one of best, good size, always in super nick...i reckon Rosewater also is a good place to play.
Salisbury - not worst but least liked for amateur footballers on the beer and pie diet - too bloody big!

Seaton wins this comp hands down. The cricket pitch area looks like the surface of the moon and the rest of the oval is a sandy, lopsided mess. Changerooms would also have to be the smallest in the league. Plenty of abuse copped from the woodstock drinking supporters.

Rosewater is not a very good oval...the carparks right behind the goals and i know of one occassion where a windscreen was smashed while i was playing.

Plympton is really uneven, shocking cricket pitch and the oval faces the wrong way.

But i havent played on either since 2006 so dont know if they've improved or not.

I love the fact that our oval (Pooraka) is always in good knick. Great size too. I think everyone that has played there will agree that the changerooms both home and visitors are nice and big. There is nothing worse than going to an opposition oval and have to get changed in their storage room or the back shed (North Haven and Adelaide Lutheran spring to mind).
It's also good that the oval has a fence around it. Can't stand ovals that extend on to paddocks or other ovals. You tend to lose where you are.
Always a good atmosphere right outside the club too.

I think the things you need to take into consideration when looking at how good an oval is:
1) Size
2) Quality of the surface
3) Surroundings (Fencing, grandstands, trees in the way (Pembroke))
4) Changerooms both home and away
5) Atmosphere
6) Layout (where things are positioned) i.e. bar, canteen.

That seems like a good checklist of things to determine a good oval.
personally I think that makes portland one of the top 5 IMO opinion then!

1) size is small as I like it. others will sya because of this it isnt a good oval!
2)being a grade cricket oval, means the surface is kept in great nick.
3)we have a fence, hills along majority of oval, which makes it good to see game!
4) changerooms are good for home side, away side is a little small but the important thing I think is that they are clean and we dont use them as a storgae room!
5) always a good atmosphere with cheers and abuse for the locals in front of the club, along the wing, and majority of the time away supporters next to there box.
6)the layout seems good, having canteen and bar window next to each other, BBQ in front of club where ya can get $3 west ends, and also I would say we have one of the best canteens in the amateur league, area in front of club s all paved so dotn get muddy standing round!

Probs more things I could say but i think those points alone demonstate why portland is one of the best in the amatuers!!

I will agree with the cheers and abuse. Your supporters didn't like me when I played their last. Actually come to think of it your runner gave me shit all game. Then came and shook my hand after and said well played. Your away changerooms are clean, but way way to small. I really like your scoreboard too.

thats how footy should be,everyone should be at eachothers throat then shake hands and have a beer once the sirens gone!
they are small, but because they are clean u can fit a side in there, ssquished they might be but there in there!!
Pooraka's changerroms are great, away showers could do with a little improvement though!

HAHA dead right there Iron Fist. I will give you the hot tip too, it's not just the visitors showers that need improving. Problem is that they are council owned changerooms so any work done is done by the council. They have actually started renovating the home changerooms so hopefully they may fix the showers.
Yes it was the season just gone. And I agree with you what happens on the field should stay on the field.

Haha, i think that runner may have been me... ;)

Visitors rooms are tiny, but we only had limited space available when we built the new clubrooms. It had to fit on basically the same site as the old Rivvies building, so obviously preference was given to home changerooms, and other things like umpires room, storage rooms and trainers rooms had to be squeezed in.

I will try doing an honest account of dolphin park

1) Size - I personally love the bigger grounds. Would probably be medium size though
2) Quality of the surface - Clipsal 500
3) Surroundings - Parklands, can offer a bit of protection from the wind. Dont think the council would let us make a public access road around the parklands side and put up a grandstand
4) Changerooms both home and away - Nothing fancy but always well maintained and room to move around.
5) Atmosphere - The scoreboard bar all the old boys drinkin cheap p!$$ and cheering u on i love it. Up above the sheds next to the stairs is a good place to watch the footy good view of all the action.
6) Layout - Oval faces the wrong way. Canteen etc in suitable place.

IF not a fan of the small oval and changerooms but everything else is spot on. FF Pooraka away changerooms not quite up to scratch but I know how difficult councils can be. Pooraka being a former Div1 club u get good oval/facilities.

I have two other points i know not as important as the others listed
1) Finding a car park
2) Finding the oval

thats fair enough flipper
I know alot of people wouldnt be a fan of the small oval, I think its good though
makes for a close physical game and not as much running ;)

finding a park is another thing that makes alot of the parkland ovals irritating aswell!

Last time I played at Portland I copped my share from under the verandah there too, but all in good fun.

Only problems I have with Portland is the size of the changerooms (although they are well-kept), and having the club down behind the goals. The other end doesn't too have a whole lot of atmosphere with the club situated where it is, but in general, I like playing there. Awesome canteen too, and we had some jugs put on after which always sweetens the experience.

Yeah, the position of the clubrooms has it's good and bad points. Once again, they had to be there as that was the original position of the Rivvies rooms. Remember, Alberton United and Rivvies used to share the ground before 1997.

It's great, as a home side, kicking towards the clubroom end in the last quarter of a tight game. Always plenty of noise and atmosphere down there, especially if a grab is taken in the goal square.
