Sydney Swans Reserves to play in SANFL?

Reports are coming out of Sydney via Troy Luff on MMM and the Sydney Swans Fans Forum suggesting that the Swans would like their reserves to play SANFL.

I guess there could be 2 options: Firstly, that the Swans field a tenth team in the comp, OR
The Swans 'align' themselves with a local SANFL club. By the time they name 22 players, an emergency, have a few injuries etc this would place about 10-12 players at one club.

This approach does not surprise me in the slightest. If the SANFL is the second best comp in the land, then arguably the Crows and Power have the advantage of grooming their players at a higher level. No doubt the NSW comp is a few rungs down the ladder, alongside the QAFL and ACT AFL comps. Even Tassie has a team in the VFL.

What are your thoughts folks?

No. For mine, if there ever was to be a 10th team, it would come from the country or the NT. Having a 'Reserves' side would cheapen our comp.

cost of flying teams to Sydney for games, and supporters missing their team play becouse of this.
happy for them to have their players droped to a designated SANFL club though, in the same way the crows and power do.

No way. What do we care for the Sydney Swans? And in no way do we need any more fringe AFL players running around in the competition who will be taken away come finals time. Why don't they just join the VFL?

Im a not yet as I want more details of how its going to work. All for a draft system like the current set up with the crows/power. Sydney players already travel to Canberra to play and then swap teams before the game starts like Junior Country footy to even the game up.



I have had disscussions with an Adelaide based player manager that the the Sydney comp and the QAFL are a joke and its insulting to expect AFL listed players to play in these substandard comps. He has even taken the step to complain to the AFL on the behalf of his clients. A player that picks up 60 touches in a game of footy and is still no closer to getting a game of AFL is outrageous.

I like this concept Tassie.

This could be used to "rotate" different teams through each year - eg the A1 Amateurs Premiers, a "State" country team or even a composite Crows/Power combined "reserves" team.

One team needn't play for a whole season either - they could even rotate teams through from a variety of comps and even better, the SANFL team with the bye could take the game to the other team's home ground in suburban or country locations.

Wouldn't even contemplate demeaning a SANFL reserves team with playing an A1 side. Players who play A1 and Amateurs that they don't want to be committed footballers let them play amongst themselves same with the country team.......

I voted never, but I would go along with this concept. So I guess I should be the never if premiership points are involved.

take the emotion out of it and it acutally could be OK...however they couldnt expect to have any home games in Sydney which would therefore give us more SANFL games per season = more times to see our teams play...food for thought

That's not going to work for either party. The SANFL clubs won't bother playing their key players and the Swans will never get a serious hit out because every game is like a trial match.

If the money was there I'd like to see an Eastern Australian Football League. Someone came up with the idea on BigFooty. Would involve Lions and Swans reserves as well as the major regional teams from NSW and QLD - eg. Canberra, Newcastle, Gold Coast, Cairns etc. It would at least be something to match the SANFL, VFL, WAFL.

well what an interesting concept this is, remember when feast was in sydney & was playing for port melbourne he asked to play for sturt instead of port melbourne as it'll help his footy & was told NO

how things change !!!! & i say no absolutely not ,also if you have a 9 team comp & a 10 team for the 1's & 2's they wouldn't be playing the same team on the same day as for nt or any other outside team i say NO WAY PLEASE DONT CHEAPEN THE COMP, if your going to get another team its got to be local (city or country) ie ,port lincoln, mt gambier, port augusta etc etc or dare i say split woodville & west torrens back to their original forms

It's superfluous to suggest a radical approach when they've just won a flag with the current set up. Luff has been talking to "supercoach" Dale Lewis too much.

I love to have a team from NT, but a 10th team that can play is better then 9 teams, which is what we got now.

The bye certainly gets up a lot of people doesn't it? Personally I think the bye is a good thing (IMHO of course).

The bye gives both spectators and players a chance to rest, I think it ensures the freshness of all players for the entire season (look at the way AFL clubs fall over with injuries as the season progresses). It also ensures in some cases that the best recruits head our way - a player may think "if I could go home every 8 weeks through the footy season then I would be more inclined to head to SA and play footy".

Therefore, Sydney can bite my crank.
