It is possible that if South lose this week but they beat Glenelg the following week they could both end up on the same number of points and the same %age.....

My questions to Spelly and Ecky are:

1. What is the system for determining the highest rank team with respect to % age (how many decimal points 2, 3 or more)
2. If they are tied on percentage does it go to win loss ratio over the season?

Personally I would find highly ironic and amusing if we went through after being tied on percentage but with a 2-1 win ratio over the season South would still miss out......

Next best scenario would be lose but be one point better in for and against so we go through......

It is a fascinating scenario which I think has come across many a spectators mind.

I honestly do not know the official procedure; I would guess very few people actually do.

I get the feeling that to make it next to impossible the % is extended to infinite decimal places to decide.

I recall seeing the % presented to 3 decimal places in the Advertiser in this situation after Round 19 1969:

North did have the .01 advantage over Torrens, but it was displayed as such:

which could indicate that the percentage can be extended if need be, and I doubt if that was the case then, it would be changed now.

Anyway, North Adelaide lost to Sturt at Unley in Round 20 (11.14 to 14.14) and Torrens won against Port at Alberton (16.15 to 9.10), so any chance of an equal % was avoided.

The 4th and 5th positions after the minor round in 1969 ended up looking like this:

It could still happen if South win this week and draw against Glenelg the following week, but South would need to win with the scoreline against West as 52 points to 32, which isn't realistic unless if the worst conditions imaginable occur at Noarlunga on Saturday.

Then the points for and against for both Glenelg and South will be exactly equal!

Someone once told me it would be based on how the two sides fared against each other during the season, but I don't know if that's official or speculative.

In the old days, the NSWRL would play midweek mini-elimination finals between the teams that were level on points at the end of the minor round.

The winner went on to play in the EF that weekend...

It should go on who beat who during the season, eg South and Glenelg are even on pts, games won and % and they played each other 3 times and Glenelg won 2 of those, then Glenelg would go through.

Surely rounding to decimal places is done only for presentation - any more than two is, in the main, a waste of print space. It's not uncommon these days to see it to one decimal place.

A quick check of the official Rule Book and I can't find any reference to it.

I get the feeling that to make it next to impossible the % is extended to infinite decimal places to decide.

I know I'd feel pretty cheated if my side missed out on some count back if they'd performed better at minor round's end, even if it was just by a thousanth of a bee's whisker.

Not SANFL, but this is how soccer leagues generally do it (SANFL would probably use something similar).

They go through this list until one team comes out ahead:

1/ goal difference

2/ win loss record between each club for the season

3/ goal difference from those clashes

4/ number of yellow (red?) cards

5/ coin toss (the A-League does this!)
