to add to the great report from the yetti

coles bought out bilo (an independant family business from the mid 70's) in 1987.
their motto to the owner david weekes was "we can't compete against your low prices so we will buy you out" david excepted the buyout and stayed on as CEO for 1 year. once the buyout was settled the CEO of coles said to david now we have your company (which they admitted they paid too much for) we now just have to screw the owner of the real estate these bilo stores were on for low rent fees. David Weeks said to the CEO, "give me a ring when you want to set up a meeting on the rents because he OWNED all but a couple of the stores freehold" made another packet on the rents.

most supermarkets % interstate are made up with the majority of coles and woolies stores. however the IGA brand is very strong especially in ACT.

Franklins stores of which were around 200+ strong in australia folded when shareholders (dairyfarmers) demanded a bigger profit during their major FRESH renovations. there are a few left but are independantly owned.

Aldi supermarkets are the discount supermarkets of australia. far cheaper than any supermarket chains in AUST.

The Big Crow at Pasadena - had that entrance and then to get to the checkouts from there you had to to the other end of the store and come back down again. :? Probably to make you purchase something on the way around.

All of the Franklins stores I think closed or converted in SA around 2000/01, and the narrow aisles were a haven for social chit-chatters. The stores I recall were at Port Adelaide (that was interesting where you had to go inside a cool room to get the frozen foods). Now a Woolworths; one was at Hollywood Plaza (now a Woolworths); Golden Grove (Foodland); and I think the Welland Jewel became a Franklins at one stage.

There was a Cheap Foods in Salisbury North; 'tis a Foodland now.

The department stores are another to have had changes over the years, Venture was at West Lakes and is now a Harris Scarfe; of course an icon for so many years, John Martins, are now a Myer at West Lakes, the Christmas Pageant stopped outside the John Martins in the city.

For some reason I recall a whole lot more about supermarkets in the late 80s; early 90s than I do footy.

The Yetti wrote:I have been in the Trade for far too many years

Set up is Chain Stores and Independent stores
Chain Stores
Coles
Bilo mostly converted to Coles or sold off. still a few in the Eastern States but owned by Coles
Woolworths..Safeway in Victoria
Aldi in Eastern States

At varying stages Coles and Woolies had price cutter stores
Coles had Price Point in the 70s and 80s
Woolworths had Fabulous

Bilo was an Independent Chain and was sold to Coles in the 70s or early eighties

Independent Chains that are still trading or have been around

Foodland Still South Aussies and still trading very very well

Tom the Cheap
Eudunda Farners also spent some time called United, but now badged IGA or Foodland
Four Square
Big Heart
Servwell
Foodtown
Welcome Mart
Half case Warehouses
Timesavers
Cash and Carry
Target Supermarkets which became Arrow supermarkets..Target was the first group to run below cost promotions along with Tom the Cheap
Jack the Ripper in Port Augusta
Rainbow stores in NT
The Big Crow at Pasadena and Alice Springs
The Boomerang store at Norwood
CCSP or something like that had a few stores
There was also a chaindown South At marion, Denham rd and at Darlington that I forget

Most of these stores are now Branded IGA which is the National Independent Chain and get their stock from the Metcash warehouse at Kidman Park, which has had so many names eg Davids, IGC, Metcash, IGA

They are all pretty much Independently owned, hence the name Independents.
There are a few Multiple Store Ownwers such as Drakes, Romeos and Chapleys and their stores trade either as Foodland or IGA.

The Independents in SA are very strong compared to the Eastern States and we are lucky to have both Foodalnd and IGA both doing well.

I reckon the original Rite Price was started by Tony ........ at Tennant Creek many years ago, then he came to Port Augusta.
Now that is just plain dumb, don't you think?

One of the sadder days in SA when Johnnie's finally shut the doors. Used to love the old lifts in the city store, with the gold metal gates behind the doors. Also had one of the better record departments of any store in Adelaide. Many the bargain that I picked up there just after they left the charts :) . Also remember Venture very well, was taken there countless times as a little tacker for shopping.

Not a chain, but I had my retail experience early in life as a student working at Miller Andersons in Hindley St, upmarket of David Jones.
I learned a lot about dinnerware, cutlery, and crystal glassware, while there.
