Only go see Sportsmed Docs and Physios if you're desperate, it's all about turning over the numbers in there rather than actually taking the time to make a proper diagnosis.

Go see Peter Roberts at Roberts Physio in the Paragon near TTP. He's very, very good.

Also, OTC anti-inflammatories are WAP. Get a prescription for something like Feldene.

It was some joint down Port Road. Went in the tube. I would hate to have a head trauma and be stuck actually laying all the way in it. Not the biggest area!

I have been playing sport regularly and have been pretty hard on it.

I have tried icing it with cold packs, using Nurofen Tablets and using Voltaren Tablets.

It just won't go down, but after i ice it, i get all bruising around the back of the knee. (i think its from putting the ice pack straight onto skin without putting a towel on under it)

Anyone have any ideas or recovery procedures you would recommend?

Amputation, at the neckline!

Sorry mate, you left yourself open to that! I have a similar problem, no cartiledge left to cushion the joint so you get bone grinding on bone. The surface of the knee joints are supposed to be shiny & smooth, mine have gone black & rough as a result of the wear & tear of years of sport and age. Arthroscopy will confirm this for you plus they clean out all the loose fragments which relieves it for a while, then it all starts again.
Replacement is high on my agenda, not because I want to, but because I have to!

MRI's are so much fun  . I loved laying there for 40 minutes (when the nurse said it would only be 20) with a stuffed back, legs too long for the thing so I had the edges digging into the back of my heels, while i had to listen to some crud on the radio. And to top it off, I'm bloody claustaphobic as all hell. every nurses dream I think.

Had to walk outside for a good hour before I had calmed down enough! Never again....

Go and see a doctor and get a referral to a surgeon. Also wear a compression bandage over the knee. This will stop and reduce the amount of swelling and will give your knee support when you train. Also after sport alternate between ice and compression for 2-3 hours. If you take the compression bandage straight off after training/playing the knee will swell.

It sounds like you may have some displaced cartiledge. Had an injury like that last season which caused minimal pain but substantial swelling. I see Geoff Verrall at Sportsmed. He referred me to Greg Keene who did my surgery and did a fantastic job. Hopefully you don't need surgery. Good luck.

tedbullpit is right.

See a good sports doctor. Such knee injuries are usually reasonably easy for a sports doctor to diagnose without further investigation, but if you need an MRI or similar, a sports medicine doctor is the best bet, as they can directly refer you for whatever treatment is best, including specialist referral, if necessary.

Knee injuries are usually either acute (ligament or cartilage), or a range of lesser types of injuries, such as tendinitis, bursitis, patella-femoral and similar. A sports doctor or physio can test for these pretty easily.

The first group obviously have an effect on stability.

I wouldn't be taking Voltaren, etc, without proper medical advice.

My dad went to the chemist and asked the lady working there what was the best medicine to reduce swelling and she gave us Voltaren.

That's fine then, you've asked someone who should know.

The most common non-acute knee injury is usually patella-femoral related, so save yourself some trouble and see a sports doctor and find out exactly what's wrong. You may find it's nothing too bad.

I went to that same chemist and asked that same lady working there what should I take to assist the swelling, she told me Viagra was very good!

I wouldn't take Voltaren or any of the NSAIDS because of the risk of gut ulceration.
Similarly, I'd never give one to a baby despite the TV advertisements saying how great the one starting with N is.

My advice is that if a professional tells you to rest it then rest it. They know what they are talking about but at the very least seek a second opinion.

GO TO THE QUACKS.From experience had to giv footy away at the age of 26 becaused of a dodgy knee. I need a knee replacement but am to young. RR post sounds just like me, in pain every stp you take. Get it seen to stupid
