THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead. It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest.

Poor bugger - he might have been seen as a bit of a tool by most Australians but he was a good family guy and did a lot for wildlife preservation and Australian tourism.

Sad when any one dies really,some cynics (not myself) will no doubt have a field day with this tragedy.Sad for anyone with a young family.

Feel very sorry for the family, his wife is reported to have not learned of this tragedy yet as she is uncontactable in Tasmania

he did die doing something he loved working with animals

THE Crocodile Man, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

A tragedy, no doubt.

Channel 10 reported it as a 'shock death.'

But is it really such a shock?

yeah I can not believe it when i heard it on the old wireless on way to work this afternoon. :shock:

Its a shame the radio stations aired it as from what i have been told his wife hadnt heard about it yet.
Its a bloody shame that a true Aussie legend has died but I guess he was doing what he loved best.
Also another famous Aussie died today Colin Theile author of Storm Boy and Blue Fin along with many more. So all in all a very sad afternoon.

Not that I'm as knowledgeable like he was on native fauna but having grown up in the remote NT and having done things like swimming in croc infested rivers when you are young and stupid and hiked through Mangroves and the like I am not surprised because having seen him do what he has done over the years - pushed the boundaries of trust between man and wild animals.

True story in 1986 or maybe 87, a Bus load of Yank tourists rocked up to Cahills Crossing on the South East Alligator river (where you cross into Arnhem land) near Jabiru for a 15 min walk and photo opportunity. About 30 m up stream from the crossing was a Jabiru local waist deep doing a bit of fishing in full view of the tourists, his son is on the bank watching, next minute a 4-5 m croc grabs the bloke and drags him under in full view of his sons and the tousists, "Is this a show?" asks one of the tourists, "Nah ma'am thats for real" says the guide as he reaches for his two way radio to raise the alarm....

Found the Croc three days later I don't think they found the blokes body....Rangers and Cops don't go diving for bodies up there, they only grab them if they can see them from a boat and at the end of the dry season the waters are all murky due to falling river levels that it is nigh on impossible to see the bottom .

If you are ever up there walking the beaches and rivers take a dog with you dog Croc will always grab a dog first because it is quadrepedal and doesn't have to turn its head, unlike when it has to grab one of us....

Seriously I'm sorry someone has died but I am not surprised he has died the way he has as the waters up there are not safe and the best thing to do if you see something dangerous is to get the hell away from it not go any closer.....

I liked him. He was a bit over the top but then most 'personalities' are.
I feel sorry for his wife and kids more than anything.
I wonder how long it will take for the jokes to come out about it all?
My boss said a few today but i didnt find them funny.

It is a shock.
Sure, he died what he was doing and it isn't suprising he went that way, but the fact he's gone is a shock.

Absolutely magnificent for Australia he was.
Will live on as well, through his parents zoo which he's grown even more.

Would be great to see little Bob grow up and take over the mantle, just as Steve did after his Dad (Bob).

was very shocked but he went doing what he loved...sad loss and he was much loved despite even if we took the piss out of him...

True story- While I was in Phuket a month ago I was doing a tour and having a chat with a family from Texas. I told them I lived in Australia. The boy asked his father "where is Australia?" His father replied" Steve Irwin's Home". Yeah very intellegient them Americans are!!

well it is a shock and was very hard to believe as its something you dont expect.

he did die doing something he loved and it is no surprise that is the way his life has ended.

its sad that he has left behind such a young family. today tonight last night showed an interview with him and his wife and he was very much family orientated.

he did push the boundaries of human and wild animals to the brink and maybe he went a little too far with the stingray, will we ever know.................
