Handy home hints

Postby Dogwatcher » Tue May 12, 2009 2:51 pm

Most of us here are Gen X and Y so practical skills are often things we lack as we've grown up in a disposable goods society.
Thought I'd start this thread to allow anyone to add some practical hints for some of the jobs we do around the home.

If you don't do the dishes for ages, the missus normally spits it. Do them earlier rather than later to avoid this.

Or if your game, remind her what the roll of a woman is.

Don't like ironing? Then drop your dirty shirts in the local Salvo's bin.

Next week you can buy them back at 50 cents apiece, and they've all been washed and ironed.

Resign from job, get your missus to work full time, whilst you stay at home and look after the kids. Hey presto, role reversal, now all those shitty jobs that you once had to do, she now does !! Easy !!

As a founding member of Generation X I offer you young 'uns this site....

http://www.videojug.com/

It has almost everything you (male or female) could ever want to know from cooking/kitchen craft to car maintenace to home decorating to hair and beauty to first aid etc etc etc all with easy to follow video clips.

I first used it to remind myself of the proper way to joint a chicken...it had been about 30 years since I'd last done that...easy...now I save a fortune by buying a whole chicken and cutting it into pieces myself.

JAS

If you're about to embark on parenthood for the first time or going around again, I can't stress enough the importance of encouraging breast feeding. Especially at 1am, 3am, 6am etc. "You know I would do it if I could...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz." ;)

Oh, apparently it's good for the wee nipper too

Roll your clean towels up ( like you did when you were goimg to the beach/pool as a kid ) & put them in the linen cupboard like that. You fit heaps more in.

For the shed:

Keep all your jars ( Vegemite, Peanut Butter ) when empty give them the quick rinse. If you have shelving in the shed ( if you dont, make the shelving about 12mm thick ) nail or screw the lid of the jar to the underside of the shelf. Then you can keep all your drill bits (label the jar - Masonry,Timber,Metal) and screws and alike in the jars. You grab the jar and twist away leaving the lid in place. This way you never lose the lids and the jars always go back to the same place. One of the best things I have done as I now know where my hex bit is for the drill or where the masonry drill bits are. They are at eye level clearly labelled.

Another thing, doggy doo-doo. One thing that bugs me is a back yard covered in dog droppings. Every night when I get home from work, the very first thing I do once I have put down wallet, keys etc is go and scoop the poop. Train yourself to do it at the same time of your day every day.
