people who punt the pokies are not smart people. worst odds ever. see mal, dutchy or AG in the gambling room if you want to make money and not waste it

Pokies are terrible, why would anyone punt on them when you know you cant win every spin?

At least at the races you know every race there will be a winner, and while unlikely, you could conceivablely pick the winner of every race...

Probably play them once or twice a month and generally at a local SANFL club when I'm there for the footy and it's half time of the reserves...

Gnerally speaking don't put more than $50 in and most times I will either break even and use it to kill the 20 minute wait for the footy to start again or blow it in 5 minutes and go and have a smoke or three.

Now only play the Shogun machine with the mind set of you gotta bet big to win big (and lose big I know) so don't waste time and money on the 1c machines. When single and living with a mate in the city, we were at the Casino every second Friday night and would probably blow $200 without blinking an eye lid. Convince myself that over that time, with a few $400 - $500 wins that I may have broken even but who am I kidding.

Now about to get married so just can't afford it but like I say, the odd flutter here and there is my limit. A couple of weeks ago went to Centrals for my Mum's birthday dinner and put my change in from a round of drinks on the Shogun (about $24) and managed to get free games inside free games inside free games.

Got it up to $1200, went all guns blazing on $9 bets and killed half hour before I knew it, but walked out with $1000 in my pocket. Then when we got home, had to give it to the missus who put it straight in the wedding account. Have been on a "lucky" streak the last 3 or 4 times I've played and I reckon with say a rough outlay of say $250, I reckon I've probably won close to $3K, including the big one at Mum's b.day.

That will be it for me now though, at least for a little while, with the wedding come up in August, really have to start watching the pennies and have / will spend some coin going to Perth this weekend for the SA v WA game so need to tighten the purse strings (or the boss wont marry me ;) )

Actually, it probably doesn't make any difference - My understanding is that they are all pre-programmed to pay to a certain percentage, which I guess means once they hit certain trigger points in earning, they'll payout a certain amount regardless of the wager.

I think the last technical report I read suggested they pay out about 15% of the input.
I've never played one either..

It's interesting, but when I won my gorilla ($1K) at Centrals the other night I was talking to the young attactive attendant and she was saying that the owners of the machines get around 90% of EVERY machines takings, the club (or facility) gets about 4% and the government takes the remiaining profit.

I guess when you think of the magnitude people spend on these in 1 night, it's no wonder the financial sustainability of many clubs is reliant on pokie revenue.

You're presuming that every spin is "true" in nature which they're not ... Personally when I play them (or used to) I'd always play every available line and wouldn't have it any other way, but a poker machine is fixed in terms of results it can (and has to) produce.
