We were watching a cooking show where it was said to always use a good wine; one that you'd drink, in cooking

Came home the next night; spaghetti bolognese...........and an open bottle of 1988 Henschke Hill of Grace...............

Just on this, any suggestions on what would be a decent Red for cooking purposes (without busting the budget)?

Any cleanskin red should be more than adequate for cooking purposes.

Good to see the winery I work at mentioned here :D

A nice drinkable clean skin is always a bargain cooking wine. Unoaked if you can. Dont go putting a $40 bottle in your cooking, but it should be something drinkable.

Im a Riesling fiend so my recommendations are Clare and Eden Rieslings (Pauletts, Skillogalee, Kilikanoon, O'Leary Walker, Hutton Vale, Pewsey Vale, Grosset Polish Hill (if you can get your hands on it))...with some good stuff coming out of WA as well (Larry Cherubino, Howard Park). Theres some real good Hills wines as well which dont have the public profile (like Nepenthe for example) but are superb - The Lane in particular, but also Ashton Hills, Bird in Hand, Shaw & Smith, Pike & Joyce.

For reds, I love Cabernet, so a lot of Coonawarra (Leconfield, Zema Estate, Balnaves, Wynns, Majella), Marg River (Voyager Estate, Ashbrook, Sandalford, Vasse Felix) and Yarra Valley (Giant Steps, Toolangi, Tarrawarra) Cabs get my juices flowing. I think Clare has underrated Cabernet as well. For Mclaren Vale id be looking at Hugh Hamilton, Primo Estate, Shottesbrooke, Mr Riggs, Paxton, Pertaringa for some good Shiraz.

Theres a lot of average cheap plonk out there...but theres always some real good finds if you can be bothered seeking information and trying plenty of wine.

I used to drink Brown Brothers a fair bit when in Oz. I love wine as an accompaniment for a meal, so on bolognese/lasagne nights I usually go after a Cab Sav'.
In Japan I was buying crates of Banrock Station from an international bulk retailer...until they ran out. I used to hunt down the Aussie wines whenever I could, but often they only had "Yellow Tail", which I don't think too highly of, and probably isn't even available in Oz.
Chilean wines compete very well with Aussie wines in cost and quality IMO, possibly because of what is available over here. But if you ever see it, "Malbec" from either Chile or Argentina is a nice drop.
When eating pizza I usually get a couple of bottles of Chianti, or anything made from Sangiovese grapes. But the best wine for pizza IMO are wines from the Rhone valley, or Grenache grapes but they aren't too available in my neck of the woods.

One of the best I have had the good fortune of drinking was a "Cotes des Blayes" from Bordeaux.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

yellowtail is available in Oz but its $9 a bottle garbage. The most widely made wine in Australia by a large large margin.

I love Malbec. Rich and floral.

Had a Chapel Hill Shiraz that gets exported to the US on the weekend called "Vicar" unbelievabley good

Look for Chapel Hill's reds to be at their best over the next couple of years since their winemaker commenced there about 3 years ago

Just reading the paper made me remember a couple - Pepperjack Shiraz, D'Arenberg Footbolt Shiraz, anything from Skillagillee and Annie's Lane Merlot.

Also got a bottle of Gramps Grenache 2005, that's gold!

Go for Kiwi Sav Blanc if you like the aroma of cat urine.

No, really:

I dropped in at Nepenthe and tasted their whites and Rose last weekend - overall not bad without being outstanding - some, like their Pinot Gris were fairly good.
I'll go back and try their reds another time - they make a fairly wide range and I'd had enough by the time I got that far...

I used to buy Brown Brothers premium varietals to try the exotic grapes like Marsanne and Sylvaner.
I remember something from Chile named "El Gato Negro" which was rather nice - even the little black cat hung round the bottle neck was well done.

I think you might as well be asking them to turn water into wne for you Dog_ger...everyone has differet taste so they'd all have different lists.

I can't give you any lists as I don't bother with expensive wines...taste buds are pretty shot having been a smoker (now ex) for 25 years so I can't tell expensive from mid-range anyway and I refuse to be a pretentious prat by pretending I can.

Best suggestion I can give you, considering you're in wine territory down there, is go visit some wineries/vinyards for a tasting...take a notebook and write down the ones you really like and gradually make your own list. You can also look for tasting sessions at a good quality off-license shops (they do them here so I assume they would there too) or just go in and say 'I tried xxxxxxx wine and loved it what else would you recommend'...it's their job to know and to help you so let them. I'll bet there's even short courses you can do if you want got serious.
