So my fiancé just got home. She was pulled over by a contingent of 5 police officers stationed in the carpark across from the Alma Hotel. She received a $160 fine for having the front fog lights on. FFS they only widen the area the light is spread. They were on when we got the car and we never even thought about turning them off. Really didn't even know they were on. Good to see the police are out there keeping us safe i guess. I'm glad my tax dollars go towards paying fat rude losers to sit on the side of the road revenue raising. I'm sure there is nothing better they could be doing

It must make these officers proud. I'm sure they go home and think "gee i've made a difference tonight. That person who had fog lights on was a real danger to society as was the person this morning that i fined for jay walking." You would seriously have to be an absolute ar%eclown to feel like you were anything but a learning impaired fool if that sort of crap was appealing to you. Obviously these guys get directions as what to do (and that is the worst of it) but it takes a special person to continue to do things that are clearly just stupid and a waste of time.

The law hasn't changed that much, it was already there, just been tidied up to reflect it's actual intent.

You are kidding surely. These are stock standard lights that are in no way brighter than the other headlights. The difference is they point in a different direction (wider). They are not add ons like some of the ultra bright blue coloured lights you see. I just hope you or your family don't require police assistance whilst they are tied up with this sort of crap. Stupid thing is no drug or alcohol test. She could have been off her face on booze and crack but they wouldn't have cared about that. Obviously the lights are more of an issue.

Yep, that was one of about 99 laws (maybe 98, maybe 100) that changed recently that the governing body failed to publicise. Fog lights on, you get a fine. There were a ton of others that were insignificant as well, but all fineable. Apparently the CEO of the governing body decided it was up to us as drivers to 'know the rules'. What a joke.

No, my issue is with the fact that 5 or 6 police were given the task of fining people who who are causing no problems whilst real crimes are being committed. Surely our taxes can be better spent or the police could be deployed in areas they are required more. Do you seriously think that a Honda Civic with fog lights on is worth a $160 dollar fine? Take into account cars with lights not working don't get a fine rather a warning. I know what i think is more dangerous.

No I don't agree it's worth $160. Although I do agree with certain conditions in which they are used. The same rule as far as I know applies in VIC/NSW too.

Ring up the Police tomorrow and ask what they were targeting in the area, and why they and so many offices deployed for such trivial matters.

Make sure she doesn't drive with the family dog/cat in her lap or that's a $95 fine.

The dog is well trained to be in the back thankfully . I will be sure to call tomorrow to ask and will report back. I am not one who normally complains but the fact that they were there without speed detection devices, drug or alcohol detection devices just seems ridiculous. Had my fiancé been drunk or on drugs (she wasn't by the way) and had gone off and run someone down or caused a fatal accident how would the police have been seen given she had just been pulled over? Purely a revenue raising exercise not a road safety exercise.

THE one thing that annoys me with headlights, is the ones that bloody change colour either in your mirror or in your direct line of sight depending on the bumps in the road

Who said anything about brightness?

I only mentioned glare, but now you mention it, most low beams do have lower wattage globes than fog lights as well as the glare issues created by the spread of the beam.

The beam is not angled to the left as low beams are, not only that, it is spread wide to the left and right side as well as straight ahead.

It is illegal to have them on unless in times of low visibility for a very good reason in normal conditions they provide far more glare than a low beam headlamp.

i personally think they are useless in SUBURBAN streets. why have fog lights on when its not foggy or raining. when its raining heavy or heavy fog then its a diff story. I will keep it to myself what i think of people who use fog lights in city streets. But yes its revenue raising for sure. Why dont the cops maybe sit in a side street just off Anzac highway on a sat night and book the people who use this road for street racing etc and make their money that way.

Because I have lived in hills environments with minimal street lighting and bushes and trees close to the edge of the road - not to mention the occasional Kangaroo - I usually have my fog lights on whenever the car lights are on for the greater peripheral vision they afford me. They point down on to the road if they are fitted correctly, not up at other drivers' eyes, and reflections off wet roads are minimal because they are designed to diffuse the light.

It may also be technically illegal to drive with your parking lights on too, yet they dazzle no one and make you more visible. In some countries you are required to have them on when you drive. I think they come on when you start your car if it is a Volvo, and it may not be possible to turn them off. Certainly that was the case when I last looked at one.

However, if the "Revenuers" are out using this as an extra tax on the community, I'll try to train myself to keep them off unless there is fog.

think the problem is tho the majority of people who have fog lights have them pointed up and it blindes other drivers on the road. Have had this problem plenty of times its like driving towards another car with their high beams on most of the time. And that can cause accidents.

and most of those cars seem to be 4WDs .....
