off the topic but on a single lane highway following a slower car, an overtaking lanes approaches, they speed up to OVER the speed limit just to stay in front and annoy you even more. Just like Keep Left unless Overtaking, i am not one to tailgate but i tend to when arrogant people sit in the right hand lane under the limit and think the world off theselves. All road, lanes highways etc are Keep Left unless overtaking. When you do your driving tests the instructor even tells you to Keep Left Unless Overtaking. Its just funny when you under take people in the left lane and then jump in front of them ( without cutting them off ) is when the fingers start raising and words are said.

You know what, even if you are entitled to drive in the right hand lane, I think it's just good road manners to stay in the left if possible.

Would certainly ease a lot of frustration.

AUSTRALIAN ROAD RULES - REG 130

130—Keeping to the left on a multi-lane road

(1) This rule applies to a driver driving on a multi-lane road if:

(a) the speed-limit applying to the driver for the length of road where the driver is driving is over 80 kilometres per hour; or

(b) a keep left unless overtaking sign applies to the length of road where the driver is driving.

I think Diss is right that it's technically only if either sign-posted or if the speed limit is greater than 80 (I assume that means it doesn't apply in 80 zones).

IIRC the rule about keeping left is to cover wide, single landed roads, not multi-laned roads. There's also something about not being allowd to pass on the left which means you are being a pain if you go slowly in the right land so no-one can legally pass you! I have heard the police commissioner talking about this and he also said driving too slowly anywhere can be an offence because you are hindering normal traffic flow and putting drivers around you at risk.

That's from a very rough and ready internet search of the SA road rules (regulations). Locky should be able to clarify.

I agree with what others have said .. there's the technical rules and then there's normal driver courtesy. If you are doing < 60 in a 60 zone then stay left! Having said that, it shits me to tears if I am in the right lane doing slightly above the limit and some wanker behind me thinks the right hand lane is for speeding

Pre Australian Road Rules (Dec 1999 in SA) it was 80kmh or greater in the Road Traffic Act, when we went to the "national standard" Aust Road Rules it became greater than 80kmh, an amendment was made for it to also include roads that are sign posted.

I just put on my indicator briefly to let them know that is why I am in the right lane.
Most then get the message, and it reduces rather than increases aggro...

Yeah you do that over here though, and morons start flashing their lights, and pointing fingers wondering why you haven't turned yet....

I see - obviously I'm still partially in Melbourne mode...
It is like those in SA who decide to pass you, on the side that interferes with it, only after you indicate your intention to change lanes.
