Im thinking this wasnt a fresh install of XP/Vista.

Was the hard drive formatted before you installed... or did you load up XP/Vista and put in the disk and install over the top? If yo did, it won't get rid of viruses.

So i stuffed around with my old laptop and got it working again, i had to like reformat everythign and re install windows etc...
everytime before hand when i tried to re install windows everytime it got to a .inf file it said it couldnt findd it

When was this? During installing Windows or once you were in Windows?

Often if that comes up during the installation, your CD is dodgy, has a scratch or something similar.

Don't even think about frigging around with Linux because if you can't work out Windows XP, you'll have zero chance or decifering any Linux variant..
While the newer Linux variants are much more user friendly, I did mean that as a last resort if he coiuldn't get the appropriate drivers.
I agree the first option for the inexperienced is to try getting the drivers instlled first.
However, if that proves impossible, Ubuntu is very good at self-installing and self-updating, and beats throwing the unit away..

LOL Wedgie,.

For the record - the Hard Drive was screwed. It wasn't 100% not working but when formatting it would freeze, and after a quick format (which did work) Windows was buggy and wouldn't install drivers/programs.

I ran the Fujitsu hard drive testing program on it and it picked up a lot of errors. One dead drive.

New drive been put in, all working nicely now (apart from the wireless network adapter which doesn't seem to work with newer routers).

Time for a Sparkling :)
