Port makes Trade waves

Postby blink » Fri Sep 22, 2006 11:32 am

IF THERE is such a thing as a fraternity among AFL clubs, Carlton, it seems, knows little of it.

In a state of disarray, the Blues are having to fend off approaches to several of its better young players from competitors hoping to exploit the sense of despair that has engulfed Princes Park in a year when the club has had to seek emergency funding from the AFL, clumsily tried to sack its coach, Denis Pagan, and claimed its second consecutive wooden spoon.

Jordan Russell, Carlton's 19-year-old first pick in the 2004 national draft, has been added to a shopping list that already has full-back Brett Thornton, 22, included on it.

Russell, like Thornton and 22-year-old forward Brad Fisher, falls out of contract at the end of next month and is yet to come to terms with Carlton.

As a former West Adelaide player, in the SANFL, Russell is understood to have attracted keen interest from Port Adelaide.

He played 10 games this year for a total of 11 in his two seasons wearing navy blue, a modest return that has been interpreted by some as a reflection of an uneasy introduction to league football under Pagan.

Port Adelaide's general manager of football operations, Peter Rohde, has already held preliminary trade talks with Carlton but would not comment on Russell last night.

"We won't be commenting on individual players or scenarios. Trade week is four weeks away. A lot could happen between now and then," Rohde said.

Port has also been linked to a pitch for Geelong's Andrew Mackie, another young former South Australian and a bid to trade with Carlton or Essendon for the first and second picks they hold in the draft.

It is believed that Port has offered a player and its first-round selection, pick five, to both Carlton and Essendon in exchange for pick one or two in hope of securing Glenelg's teenager midfielder Bryce Gibbs.

"Would it surprise anyone to know that we're keen to get hold of the first or second pick?," Rohde said.

"We've spoken to five clubs and over the next week or so we'll speak to a lot more. I think it's fair to say we're interested in improving our position in the draft."

********************************************************************************************************

Who does everyone think that the player who Port has offered to Carlton/Essendon for the No. 1/2 picks along with pick 5, may be?

Surely not Thurstans?
