Hooray for Total SANFL getting a mention in the "favourite TV shows" section!

and hooray for the 0.5% of Port Adelaide supporters who said that the club they dislike the most is "Port Adelaide"

AND hooray for the 4.1% of Crows supporters who have been supporting them for over 20 years!!!

A lot of interesting results, but remember (as the disclaimer says) because it's based on a self-selected sample, it's meaningless to pretend that the survey accurately represents the views of the population at a whole. However, it's still useful because the results can be compared with each other. That is to say, while people who bothered to take the survey are likely to be vastly more interested in Aussie rules than the average person, within that limitation there's no reason to think that they won't spread evenly across the range of Aussie rules lovers (who have access to the internet and look at the Tiser site occasionally).

For example, one to watch is that, while (self-stated) "strong" interest in the SANFL is doing pretty well at 40.9%, it dips to only a third of people under 25 (i.e. those who have lived most of their lives in the post-Crows era). Inevitable perhaps, but you wouldn't want it dropping too much further below the average, for the long-term health of the comp.

One that is always bound to generate controversy is the 'which club do you support' question. You can arguably disregard the self-selection issue, because there's no great reason to think that, for example, a North supporter would be more likely to fill out the survey than a South supporter. I doubt that any particular club supporter group would have had a drive to 'fill out the survey'. It's obvious that club membership and (to a lesser extent) attendances aren't a reliable measure of a club's support, because there's a large body of 'passive supporters' out there who will rarely have any active involvement in the club (and their level of involvement is likely to waver with on-field performance).

So, to reprint the results below for ease of argument, could it be true that the below is more-or-less an accurate representation of how SANFL club support divides up across South Australian footy fans?

Port Adelaide: 20.9%
Sturt: 14.8%
North Adelaide: 14.4%
Norwood: 13.5%
Glenelg: 11.1%
Eagles: 7.9%
Central Districts: 6.8%
West Adelaide: 5.7%
South Adelaide: 4.9%

Most of them have some ring of truth. Due to the Pahhhhr factor, Port Magpies would now be the team with the highest 'passive support' rate. It is difficult to explain the low Centrals result without wheeling out stereotypes (e.g. financial impediment to internet access, less interest in reading newspapers) that may not have any basis in reality.

The survey was advertised on the North Adelaide official website, which explains why North Adelaide's supporter percentage is higher than people would expect. (Cue Wedgie for an argument :) )

Disappointed with coverage of SANFL football in the Advertiser?

Here is your chance to make a point. The Advertiser is currently running its annual survey seeking opinions about AFL football. But this time there is a small section on the SANFL where you can register that you have a strong interest in the local competition. I urge all supporters of the SANFL to complete at least the SANFL section of the survey - hopefully the Advertiser will get the message and increase its coverage of our great competition.

The survey can be accessed until 14 July 2006

Actually Ecky I agree with you and was going to bring this up, I think bringing it up on the Roost where there's quite a few active online fans would have had a bigger influence than the official site but I did see a similar thread on at least 2 other fans forums.
I don't think North have more supporters than Norwood but I do think we have more than Sturt but I think the top 5 would be pretty well on the mark as far as supporters that have online access goes.
