few years back you had up to 4-5 who came from down south to play..it was pretty well known..i think a guy called clancy may have been one?..memory a bit hazy now

According to the SAAFL schedule Div 6 A grade umpires are paid $90 a game......so if anyone on that field on the weekend was getting more then one of the umpires i would be very very surprised.

I thought the same thing that the umpires seemed a little touchy.....not biased towards either side just very picky and paying free kicks by the letter of the law.

A very good game of football to watch though with the lead swinging back and fourth all afternoon

few years back you had up to 4-5 who came from down south to play..it was pretty well known..i think a guy called clancy may have been one?..memory a bit hazy now

yeh jamie clancy and hodgy and some others.. they knew the coach pretty well and they all came together.. clancy is at SHOC's now and hodgy is a copper over in W.A.. quailty football players, probably up there with the best we have had play at our club..

you guys did okay the other year in div 6 so who knows you might go back up, hopefully we do go up so we dont have to travel that far next year

Dont mind when the umpires get interpretations wrong, it's when they make incorrect decisions which aren't even in the rule book which makes people upset. E.g. a high tackle/hit on patterson?? at half forward (in the 2nd quarter i think?) and a free kick paid (which was the correct decision) but then a 25m penalty as well. Since when does a high tackle warrant an automatic 25m penalty?? Umpires just seem to make up their own set of rules as they go. This is what frustrates people.

Its funny you mention that first 25m penalty. I was the infringer in that instance and i got told the free kick was not paid for too high but because i had used a punch tackle. I then asked what a punch tackle was and all he said was that i was lucky it was not a red card. I then asked if it was high and the umpire said no just a punch tackle. I then got another 25m penalty against me. This time your number 6 dived for a mark that went through his hand and on to the ground but he landed on it and it looked like from a distance that he held it the whole way to the ground. I asked the umpire who was 30 m away from me and couldn't see the contest because i was blocking his view " how sure are you that he took the mark". He then penalised me 25m for questioning his decisions. I tried to ask him the question a few more times but just kept telling me it was 4 -5 times i had questioned his decision. These incidents both took place in the second quarter.

The half time siren goes and as i am jogging in to our huddle the umpire starts a conversation with me. He says that i need to stop questioning his decisions and just play the game. I then asked the umpire if i had used a threatening voice or tone, had i shown aggressive body language towards him or threatened him in any way and all he responded was that he was harsh on me with the second 25 and that he was trying to be fair to both teams. Then in the second half payed about 4-5 more 25m penalties for stuff that just wasn't there.

I really want the umpires to just pay major free kicks and let all the other stuff go. Stop watching the AFL and officiating like your life depends on it. Most blokes that play div 6 footy play so because its the highest level they could play or it suits there life style. We are not paid professional athletes who do this full time. We are just blokes who are trying to have a kick and a catch on saturdays. Just pay 10 -15 free kicks a game and let the game flow.

Ok that is my rant over with. Sorry to be so long just need somewhere to vent. (TG i am starting to get in to your range here)

what about the free kick down the field for heccies in the 2nd quarter after a BL made contact with the heccies player after he kicked it. i think snicko was needed to see if there was any contact.

i think a lot of umps are really struggling with the rules. i know i got kicked in the hand and the ump said the player was going for the ball so its not kicking in danger.

another thing is you cant even ask the ump these days for why they gave a free kick. i got the same "are you questioning my decision" when i asked what was the free for when a heccies and BL were bumping each other and a free kick was given to BL in the goal square after they scored a goal (incident happened at CHF).

I'm currently employed but my contract ends on Friday. I rang the SAAFL and asked if I could umpire on Saturdays, figuring that I couldn't be any worse than the Div 5/6 (disclaimer : I haven't seen Div 5/6 this year) umpires going around and also getting a 100 bucks for a Saturday arvo.

I was told that I'd have to go to training Tuesday and Thursday each week for about 4 weeks to determine fitness/experience etc - because I have no umpiring experience.

Then after that, they'd allocate me to a grade. Seeing as there are only a few matches remaining on the other side of that 4 weeks of training, they said it's probably not worth it.

My problem as I've stated before is that training is at Thebarton. I live at Modbury with a wife and 2 kids (2 year old, 7 week old). Chances of me getting a leave pass to go to training twice a week, zero. It seems the only ones that can umpire have grown up kids, or no kids. That would limit the amount of people wanting to get into umpiring itself. Hence you do seem to get guys that are *ahem* older, slower ....you get my drift.

Maybe they need to rotate the venues holding training at various clubs would also help to build rapport and confidence in players to see umpires training hard and having a beer after wards in the club.

You could consider umpiring over 35s, most weeks are double headers so twice the opportunity. And the age of the umpires is directly proportional to the age of the players when compared with the SAAFL

Given a shortfall in umpires..if you signed up and didnt train wouldnt they simply assign you to lower grade games given the need for umpires? With the fitness level of some of the umpires im sure it wouldnt be that difficult to pass their fitness standards.

yeh, I'm going to do that and to be fair, that's exactly what SAAFL told me to do. Then if I liked the umpiring I could do it next year. To be perfectly honest, I'd be doing this for three reasons. 1. I'm unemployed 2. to keep a bit fit 3. keep involved with the game. Hopefully reason 1 will be under control by next season ;-)

yeh, I'm going to do that and to be fair, that's exactly what SAAFL told me to do. Then if I liked the umpiring I could do it next year. If you don't mind a little bit of travel on sat the Plains leagues would take you and start you with juniors 14/17 and pos b grade striaght away if you know your footy. They train at Argana Park on wed and are a lot better mob than the idiots at SAAFL. You get paid for all grades and are looked after by the clubs before and after games. I did a year umpiring up there last year after giving away footy for a year and had a ball but would never consider the same job for the SAAFL
