Fergie is going to have to pull something out the hat (eg Larsson 3 years ago) for united to be competitive in England & Europe at this stage.

Wonder how much of the Ronaldo sale $$ actually found their way to the transfer kitty? As with most American owners, they could use a few extra million pound to service current levels of debt.

Thought that myself CP. But the Glazers have been true to their word about making funds available for transfers etc despite the club being in debt. I know the Ronaldo fee would almost pay off the debt on its own but so far the oners ambitions seem to be the same as Fergies. Certainly dont blame the glazers for selling Ronaldo.

They seem to have been pretty sensible with their spending .. A coupla years back United didn't do too much on the transfer market, but then the following season had about 80mil to spend (IIRC, Nani, Anderson, Hargraves, maybe more).

Not a bad idea if you think you have enough to get through a year to put the $$ aside and add it to the following years transfer fund.

Man Yoo have signed some French u/21 for around 3 million quid from Beauredaux (spelling??). Interesting thing is that he had to be loaned out as he couldnt hold his spot with the main team. Also rumours are that this could end the united career of Nani.

As for the Owen signing this looks to be a shrewd bit of business from Sir Alex. Even if it goes balls up it wont really cost us anything as he was a free on a performance based contract. 2 concerns for me are his fitness (obviously) and the fact that he has never linked up well with Rooney for England.

Do you think? I think Nani is quality. Young and a bit raw, but he's a great talent and who better to mold him than Fergie?

I expect Nani to take a step up and be one of Utd's top performers this season.

Has anyone heard/read anything about where David Villa, the apparent "best striker in the world" may be signing? Surely Valencia can't resist the huge money that other clubs may throw at them?

Agreed swooper, and knowing Fergie, he will get more out of Owen than either Real or Toon. Can hardly call a basic $43k a week as costing nothing, but in the scheme of things today it isn't a big wage. However this will rise to up to $240k per week depending on goals, wins etc. Maybe that's how they all should be paid.

Not sure about the England comment. Owen and Rooney did have a good partnership before Owen dropped off the scene and I am sure Fergie would have remembered this when he was thinking about bringing Owen to Old Trafford.

Manchester United could beat Liverpool to land Valencia star David Silva
Manchester United could rival Liverpool in a fresh move for Valencia and Spain midfielder David Silva. United have also bid for Silva’s team-mate David Villa.

United have more "readies" available so if there is a battle to sign Silva, between Pool and Man U, right now my money would be on Man U although liverpool do have closer links with the Spanish

Toure next on hit-list as Man City look to raid Arsenal again for £15m man
Manchester City, unruffled by the latest outspoken attack on them by Sir Alex Ferguson, are in talks with Arsenal over a £15million deal for defender Kolo Toure.

Would spell the end of any chance Arsenal have of finishing in the top 3 imo.

VILLA KEEN TO STAY AT VALENCIA
Valencia forward David Villa would be happy to see out his career with Los Che.

The 27-year-old Spain international has long been linked with a move away from the Mestalla, with speculation rife earlier this summer that he would be sold to ease the club's financial worries.

Villa reportedly attracted interest from clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea.

He has remained tight-lipped on the topic of his future over the summer but has broken his silence to reveal he never considered playing for another club against Valencia's wishes.

"I could not spend all summer refuting things, so I wanted to be quiet," he said. "I depended on the decision of the club. They decided for me to stay and I am glad. I was told I should leave Valencia for the good of the club. Soon after that everything changed and from that moment on I never saw myself out of here. There is no train missed because all I have achieved is because of Valencia and the Spain national team so I do not think any train has passed."

Former Valencia president Vicente Soriano confirmed earlier this month that Inversiones Dalport had taken their shareholding in Los Che to 51% and promised a cash injection of 500million euros to wipe out the club's debts.

The last line in this report is astonishing and shows that it's not just the EPL that is running on debt
