Great game down at Mawson Lakes yesterday spoilt by some very ordinary officials (but that's another story in itself)...The Owls came out with great intent and really wanted the 2 points to get back in the 5....full credit to them they played 4 quarters of good, hard footy...we were very happy to get the win.

Looking forward to Henley this week, we've got a good record at Shark Park so should hopefully be a good game.

4/4 for me, but I did back Ovingham last Thursday and by the sounds of things won't be able to back them again this season

St.Pauls OS had just returned from their long road trip down to Flinders Uni, when the Angle Vale Owls made theirs to Mawson Lakes on Saturday. The 2 teams had a close encounter in Round 3 and this promised to be no different with Owls teetering outside the 5. While arguably fielding their strongest line up of the year, the Owls jumped the Saints against the breeze with a 3 goal head start. Midfielders Nicholas Hook and Jarrod Gordon were winning the footy for the Owls, putting score board pressure on the Saints. The Saints hit back with goals to Ivan Novosel and the laconic Steven McNamara to put the game at level pegging at quater time. The second quater mirrored the first with an arm wrestle developing between the two sides. With nothing in it at the long break, Angle Vale coach Steve De Jager pleaded with his troops to continue to apply pressure to their more fancied opponents, as an upset was in his site. After the break the Saints jumped into action with Lachlan Kennett and Nathan Bruce-Gordon winning the clearances and pulled away with a 3 goal lead. Not to be outdone the Owls hit back late in the 3rd term to again bring the margin back to level pegging. Saints Coach Riddler gave his lads a rare 'Spray' at 3 quater time appealing for his lads to find another gear. This seemed to work as the Saints broke away again to a 3 goal lead, which was set up by the well travelled Dov Larking, who kept throwing himself at the footy in the air and on the ground. The brave Owls wouldn't lie down but some inaccurate kicking gave them no chance to peg back the margin. Birthday Boy Novosel would be the difference between the two sides finishing with 7 majors while McNamara chipped in with 4. The Saints now head to the Sharks den for a challenging match against top side Henley while Angle Vale are in a log jam with several other sides for the 5th spot on the ladder.

Well done to the SAAFL for organising to have Div 1 Reserve umpires come to do our A Grade game. Barry Lewis and Terry Crispin quickly came from their TTG vs Modbury game to officiate our match, albeit with a slight delay to the start, which hardly mattered as it just gave us a bit of extra time to warm up. It is amazing what good umpires do for a game, they allowed the game to flow and you hardly noticed they were there, resulting in minimal frustration and a field of players focused only on winning the football. A great day of footy for both players and spectators.

we didn't forfeit, the league has made us 'indefinately suspended'

we are having a meeting on thursday night and i hope to get Mr Shadiac or another official down there plus a few old members and past players. we are currently in debt to the SAAFL approx $4500... around $2000 of this is administration fines accumulated by our now resigned team manager. we need to put a plan in place and get a proper committee organised that will sustain the club for the rest of this year and the for next season. Ovingham is not dead, just in a spot of bother.

blame could be placed anywhere and i spoke to chris last night and effectively he takes some responsibility for mismanagement but at the same time he had little to no support and he doesn't have the nouse to run a footy club by himself.

thursday nights meeting we will be putting a committee together and looking to get back to playin footy this weekend, as long as the SAAFL will come to the party and give us a hand.

Didn't you have a get-together on Saturday, did anything positive come out of it?

That's very good to hear....with the Div 1 bye this weekend hopefully the good umpires will filter down the grades.

yeah a few boys, around 25 or so, got together on Saturday and the bar takings were just under $500 in profit i think. we will be having a meeting on Thursday to appoint a new committee etc and get everything put into place to get back to playin footy this year.

how much chance do you blokes (and ladies) reckon we have in gettin the SAAFL to come to the party and help us out a bit, i've heard artound the traps that they have helped other clubs in the past...

I think that they will help you strategically, I don't think they'll help you financially.

yeah, i'm not gettin my hopes up. they are putting together a payment plan of sorts so we can get back to playing and we'll get organised off the field. once the off field structure is working then on field will kick into gear properly too!

When you do get back to playing, make sure you organise a function the night of the next home game. Get a few players involved in organising it, doesn't have to be anything with initial outlay, just make it a theme night or costume party and have a good ol' fashioned piss up to get the bar cranking.

Is there any chance of Ovingham getting 2 sides in time for this weekend against Athelstone? When will that descision be made?

I feel sorry for the players that have been working hard since xmas to play footy, if Ovingham fold the cut off date for clearances has passed and their year could be over.

Nuggety - a $500 club always works too.
$100 bucks a ticket for a good return if you win.

And, it's never a bad time to run a gentleman's evening ;)

I disagree DW, they are hugely over-priced and nothing like they used to be. They spend most of the night hassling patrons for raffle ticket for lap-dances and bugger-all time actually providing entertainment. The last couple we had have been flops(pardon the pun), blokes leaving early and going out elsewhere.

well hopefully we can get the go ahead from the SAAFL to play this weekend, that's the issue.

it is very sad, the worst part is that no-one knew about the dramas until they exploded in our face on Thursday. it all could have been rectified with better management and more support but we can't do much now unfortunately.

there has been some support from ex players/members so i can see things coming good in the next couple weeks. stay tuned!!!

Depends how they're run. IMO if you try to make profit from the entry fee then it becomes overpriced and blokes are reluctant to come. Best bet is to make the entry fee low enough to cover the cost, you get a real good turnout and then they can spend the rest of their money over the bar.

I don't think the entry fee was too stiff, the way the ladies constantly bugged the patrons into purchasing the raffle tickets or pay straight up for a lappie got people annoyed. There would've been less than 10% of the time that they were actually providing entertainment. We may have got a dud mob on the night but the last couple of times it was a waste of money, we would've been better off keeping it as a family club for the night, it's an avenue that we wont be taking again.

You make a good point, can get a good crowd through so many other ways, organising a Men's Night is a friggin pain and has a big initial outlay. However, as long as there is a demand for it I'll still do it (plus I'm on good terms with the company I use ;) ).
