the div 5 writer has been pretty good this year and has given us a fair break even when we have not deserved it..but..2 things

we played plympton and he selects them by 60..we are 3 goals down at 3/4 time and playing with some extreme discipline..but we lost..so we play westies this week and the selection is 120..so for playing our hearts out against a higher ranked team we get told the winning margin will double this week..bit inconsistent..and its at home for us..

and secondly:

When these sides last met, Westminster OS ran out 109-
point winners and I this time may be no different.Despite
somewhat of a shock loss at the weekend at home to
Rosewater, the Dragons should bounce back strongly.
The side, led by Luke Radley (4 goals on Saturday),
Jonathan Ferris and Luke Warburton, have done enough
to suggest they are still a threat come finals time – as
long as they get there first.Kenilworth is, not surprisingly,
lumped in another relegation battle. This time last
season the boys from St Marys were struggling, set for
relegation and copping a heap from this writer for their
haphazard performances on the park. Not much has
changed. Given a second chance, the club has once
again stumbled, owing to a lack of depth and inability to
kick winning scores. Kane De Bono and Simon Croucher
are two Kookaburras that have been able to hold their
heads high for the most part of the season.
Westminster OS will certainly get their season back on
track with a comfortable win in this fixture.
Pulteney and Plympton are neck and neck in the lead-up to
the 2009 finals series in very much the same way as
Greenacres and Golden Grove were last year. While they did
not exactly set the world on fire in their 55-point win against
Kenilworth, Plympton still created 30 scoring shots and
showed that one man (Jim Smith) does not carry the side.
Sure Smith is arguably the most exciting player in Division 5
at the moment and the Bulldogs would love to have him on
the park; however, last weekend’s match gave a chance for
guys like Phil Middlin (3 goals), Jeremy Kennewell and Chris
Shepherdson to take centre stage.

now kane de bono has not been in the best players all year..so strange to pull his name out of nowhere..where does he play? :)

and chris shepherdson broke his ankle in the middle of the second quarter..so he must have played a top game from the emergency room at flinders LMAO

But who provides them with their information.
You'll probably say "they obviously make it up".
But...they've obviously got contacts in the competition, so someone's giving them flawed info - they may even be from your club.
Remember, these blokes are probably just like you, playing for or administering/coaching their club and relying on info from others, the same way you do, to find out how each club's going.
Believe me, it's very hard to put previews together and I think, if they're not having a crack at your team for no reason each week, then you've got to give them some lee-way.
However, if they're getting it wrong consistently, they need to find new contacts.
I'm sure the Div 5 writer is reading this thread ;)

We haven't been asked to supply anything at all for them to go by, Bondy & Fairhurst have a bit of a niggle at each other when the other person get's a mention, it takes the pressure off of them to perform. The editor probably just uses a few names that pop up from time to time and try to include them in, at least they're trying. I'm pretty sure I know who writes them and I'd be pretty sure that that they are unable to attend any games, maybe clubs should be pro-active and provide "Dear Ed" with some insight.

I'm not having a dig at you zed as we have been on the ar$e end of some criticism aswell, just suck it up and prove them wrong, they were only 5 points out in your game vs Plympton though.

Should we take the stance of any write up is better than none? It used to be Div 1 and Div 2 and the rest didn't matter. I see your point Zed and I know how passionate you are but DW is right when he talks about how hard it is to write on each game in each div and get the facts 100%.

thats why they have different writers for each division..so they only have 5 games each week to cover..he only has to get the facts right in 5 games..and this weeks write up involves guesswork at its funniest..wouldnt you at least look at the best players in the sunday mail or in the saafl publication??..if you did you would see that de bono was nowhere and neither was shepherdson..he was getting plaster put on an ankle i presume :)

i repeat..he/she has been pretty good this year..but that doesnt make him/she untouchable..they are not above being critiqued surely? :)

Not saying they're above being critiqued. Just providing a different perspective.

It would be better if they weren't anonymous, if I was in that situation I'd contact all of the coaches and try and get a brief weekly summary off of them.

Everyone makes mistakes, however, I personally would avoid writing about specific players unless I was very sure about what I was writing about (ie. had seen for myself or had been given information). Plenty of other stuff to write about anyway.

Not defensive at all. As I said, just providing a different perspective.
So often on these boards those who are writing about football are bagged for various reasons.
Some times we're too quick to criticise.
