DOes anyone know any computer shops that are still selling the DVD drive LG 8164 ?
They are one of the few drives capable of reading WII Games and ebay are way too expensive for that very reason.

When I researched that myself a while back I believe there was one supplier that gets referred to quite often in a lot of forums (sorry, can't remeber where) but the price was prohibitive. Get yourself one of these instead. Works a treat:

You know, you don't need to buy ANYTHING to mod your Wii

Well, apart from an external HDD to store the games.

Really?

Just an external HDD... plug it in via USB and away you go?

Nope.

You need to mod it.
Many tutorials on the 'net

But in essence, you can mod your Wii, get the hombrew channel on, install apps, including the USB loader so that you can rip/play games from an external source (like a 500Gig HDD!)

Hmm, you used to be able to do that but I only found that out after updating my Wii's firmware online to version 4.0 in which Nintendo killed off the ability to run homebrew. Unless you install it BEFORE updating, which sadly I did not do.

(Don't you have to get some weird crack from Zelda Twilight Princess or something? All sounded a bit too convoluted for me to be honest).

EDIT - just found there is a new fix for the issue I mentioned! God bless the hacker!

Yeah there's three hack types.

You can also downgrade the firmware later on

But yeah, do NOT upgrade the firmware!

I use the USB gecko (a little more expensive than the one in the link above but a lot faster) to backup games but haven't started using an external HDD yet - still using DVD's. Might have to look into picking up a cheap one for game storage as well.

Managed to get homebrew on and upon installing the USB Loader 1.1 I get the error.
ERROR Could not initialize USB subsys (ret = -1).
After research it seems my HDD isn't compatible.
Was a great idea though DISS, kids will just have to use disks still.
