3/5 this week. Uni's upset Angle Vale's finals chances and Henley seal the Minor Round Flag with it's win against the Raggies.
It was a case of 'Survivor' at Mawson Lakes with injury depleted sides St.Pauls OS and North Pines going head to head. Both clubs would have thought that 'Survivor' host Jeff Probst rocks up each Thursday night telling the coaching staff that his tribe had spoken and voted another player off their lists. The lowly North Pines Redbacks have been decimated by injuries this season, so much so, that it's coach Mal McPhedran dons a guernsey each week. St.Pauls too have had their share of problems, and the lady umpires of the SAAFL would be pleased to know that Coach Riddler brings his tight fitting shorts just in case of any hiccups. However his gear was not required Saturday, as Daniel Crowe made his 'A' grade debut and became the 42nd player this season to don an 'A' grade jumper for the Saints. The game began in scrambly fashion as the visitors looking to atone from their previous weeks performance, came out desperate for the footy. The Saints couldn't get their running game going and led by only 1 goal at the quater time break. The game was still in 1st gear, when a scuffle broke out early in the 2nd term and this seemed to click the Saints into action piling on 9 goals for the quater. North Pines luck all but dissapeared when Saints player Adam Molloy tackled Todd Keogh in an innocuous tackle in the 3rd term, resulting in a sickening injury to the key position player. The game was held up for several minutes as Keogh's well being became the focus for both sides on the ground. A seven goal third term for ths Saints left them at 18 for the match and the possability of having it's biggest win of the season. It panned out that way as Ivan Novosel showed some party tricks, Lachlan Kennett found plenty of it, and Jason Mattner laid claim to the Div 7 'Goal of the Year' with a stunning run that began at Half back, including several bounces, bits of 'Candy' sold, before finishing off with a magnificent kick from the boundary. The Saints finished with 14 majors for the final term, as it's best players for the match being Novosel with 15 goals, Kennett, Derek O'Gorman, Mattner and Molloy who was celebrating his 150th Match. For the Red Backs, it's coach battled hard as did Corey Olsen while Greg Moore kicked 4 of his team's 6 goals. North Pines will be hoping to have some players return while the Saints head to SHOC next in an intriguing battle between 2nd and 5th.
