Umpiring Questions

After yesterday's debacle I have the following honest 3 questions that Im hoping some people may be able to answer for me:

1) I always thought when there was a goal kicked on the siren it was the controlling umpires decision to deem if the ball left the boot before or after the siren not the umpires furthest away from the action and at a different distance away from the actual siren??

2) Why does the SANFL have a rotational policy when the 3 best umpires are not umpiring on Preliminary Final day, surely umpiring isn't that strenous an activity that the 3 best umpires need 2 weeks off before the GF? Shouldn't the best umpires do the Qualifying, 2nd Semi, Prelim and GF??

3) Were North honestly that undisciplined yesterday to give away more than twice the free kicks they received and to be 14 to 4 at 3/4 time??

All are genuine questions and I'd appreciate clarification on them.

With regard to your first question, I spoke to an AFL umpire at the ground just after this occurred. The rule on this is the same in both the AFL and SANFL: Any umpire can call the end of quarter, NOT necessarily the "controlling" umpire at the time. As it happened, on this occasion it was the umpire furthest from the action, BUT the closest to the siren that heard it, therefore it was the correct decision for the goal to be overruled. It comes down to who is the first to hear the siren in this instance; while it was unfortunate for North, the correct decision was made.
I'll steer clear of the 2nd one at this stage, but the 3rd one was interesting. Thought the umpiring wasn't too bad from where I sat, but there were some unusual ones paid that did leave me waiting for the replay to check how the interpretation arose.

I didn't see the game today but from what I have seen all season the Eagles definitely get the best of the umpires. Take a look at last week. The umpires were the only reason the Eagles got back in the game. It is really frustrating and one of the reasons I hate the Eagles. They seem to be protected species.

Nah mate, if I was looking for excuses I would have brought up injuries and the fact that the Eagles had a 5 goal breeze in the first quarter which swung around at 1/4 time to be a cross breeze!

Holding the ball seemed to be abit of a Problem for the guys in white but it went both ways .

cennals05 I would have thought you as a doggies fan would prefer the umpiring in FINALS as the umpires turn a blind eye to the DOGGIES tactics in the packs and when an opponent takes a mark !!

Just watching the replay and that damn siren definately went as Younie dropped the ball to his foot.

My daughter just walked in and saw me watching the game and her only sentence to me was "we should have got a lot more free kicks than we did yesterday".

As a neutral supporter analysing the replay I thought the Umpiring was shocking.

The Eagles were given a great run for 3 Quarters with Gill's non-decision in the vital 3rd Quarter a joke.

I suppose they were evening up the 8-1 free count North received in the Final Quarter of last year's Elimination Final.

Seriously the standard wasn't good enough for a SANFL Final of such importance.

Hope Mr Harris is reading these posts.

It's not when you hear the siren, or when TV hears the siren, it's when the umpire hears the siren that matters. Only the umpire can judge that one. I agree with you on the rotaional umpiring point. The best 6 umpires whould officiate the first 2 rounds of the finals, and the best 3 should do the PF and GF.

From an unbiased point of view, I didn't think the umpires were too bad yesterday. Well, no worse than usual anyway

Watched the game on the box, and thought the Roosters could feel hard done by ... Not saying it cost them the game because umpiring very very (very) rarely ever costs anyone a game when their own mistakes or failure to maximise opportunities is a far greater factor ... However, as previously mentioned the umpires looked too nervy to pay free kicks close to goal and pretty much threw the HTB rule out the window ... I'm all for letting things go a little more in finals, but reward the tackler still if it's as obvious as some of them were yesterday!

Rowston got the Younie call right too I might add and as Spider suggested, the corret decision was made.

Can't help thinking Jarman erred real bad in playing Gill ... I mean take a punt on players carrying a slight injury in finals if you must, but Gill's looked so bad he couldn't hide it and was terribly hampered in several contests, don't see the wisdon in that one.

Was impressed with North, they showed plenty of metal and could very easily have won that game ... That said, was very impressed with some of the younger Eagles contributions, in particular the lad that stood Alleway (name escapes me) and Lomas, and also thought that Dabrowski's influence was HUGE.

The lad who stood Alleway was Zack Hier. I agree, the AFL clubs might be showing some interest in him, he looks a likely type. He certainly bathed Alleway yesterday.

Funny you should mention AFL talent scouts gentleman sitting in the bradman stand with a Swans shirt on the entire time he was there he was writing non stop !! Could he be a scout ?
