This year Henley has a player list of well over 100 people for 4 teams. not everyone can play every week due to work, injury or whatever other reason. naturally everyone plans to be available in august/september so we have over 100 players to choose from to fit into 4 teams. The A and B grade have to pick their teams this week even though they don't play. We have picked from who's available that has not been selected in the A and B grade.

Jamali Sarai isn't exactly a stranger to Div 7 footy by the way, having played the majority of games including the finals series with the C grade last year.
Any suggestion that we - or any other club - would stack a team for one week of a finals series to get in a GF doesn't make sense - you still have to win the GF with the team you've got available on that day. So if we were to stack a team we would only be fooling ourselves - and setting ourselves up for failure.

Jamali didn't play last week for the B grade, he was named with us. I'm not sure how other clubs would prefer we handled this situation.

Good luck to all teams today.

sound to me like
houghton are a bit worried already and looking for excuses. It's not like they've named their A grade. Don't you have anyone to run with these players. If you're any good you'll be in div 6 tomorrow and if you're not then we have the prelim final we've all been waiting for. (hopefully)

I saw Wes LeGrand win his 7th medal with 31 votes the other night. That is an amazing accomplishment and deserves congratulations. The statistical imbalance of this is he was only twice named best player in the paper this year.Im not here to criticise him as i dont see him play, but i would like to ask those of you that play against him..Is he really that good??? How does he get over 30 votes every year??? Dont any of the opposition teams tag him??? Should we give him the 2010 medal now???

Or an even better situation for the neutral viewer farmer, henley go out in straight sets and st pauls win today, then we will have a houghton vs st pauls granny! that would be better than the dream prelim final, as they both go up and continue the rivalry next year....

That would be fantastic as it's my birthday on the 12th and me and a few other old farmers are picking the best gf and getting on it. would definatly pick this game and get out in support of another old farmer.

Dissapointing day for Saint Pauls. Both grades battled hard all day but unfortunatley were beaten by better teams on the day. B grade lost it in the first quarter when they went six goals down at quarter time, but matched it with Henley for the rest of the match and although the A grade won just as much ball as Athelstone, they made the most of their opportunities up forward. The saints have improved dramatically from last year and hopefully they can make a difference next year. Good luck to the remaining teams in Div 7 for the rest of the finals series!

Awful conditions yesterday at Raggieland made for a very ugly game and both teams battled very hard all day but in the end Athelstone adapted better to the conditions with their bigger, older bodies and thoroughly deserved their win.....Roberts made a welcome return for The Raggies and showed how classy he is, he could be the wildcard to get them further this year.

Quite a few people have been waiting for or wanting St Paul's to fail this year and from an outsiders view you could probably say we did yesterday but from the inside this year has been a massive success both on and off the field. The Club was on it's knees at the end of last season with us having to possibly close the doors or go back to one side again and to turn things around and have both A's & B's play in Semi Finals is a credit to the club as a whole.

It was always a 2 year plan when I got appointed coach to get the club out of Div 7 and this year has given us a fantastic base for next year.....I wish Henley, Athelstone & Houghton all the best for the next 2 weeks and good luck!

p.s I apologise that the "dream" final did not eventuate for everyone :)

2/4 again :(

A Preliminary Final was up for grabs at Athelstone Swimming Centre yesterday as St.Pauls OS did battle with Athelstone. A Cyclone hit Athelstone Oval during the B grade making the playing surface similar to Grant Hackett's playing arena for the later match. The players swam out into their positions and it was the Raggies who drew first blood. Mario Piro used the Butterfly stroke to get loose on a couple of occasions and like a Water Polo player nailed two early goals. This was all that was kicked in the first quater and when interchange player Andrew Roberts scored early in the 2nd, the Saints were in danger of being drowned on the scoreboard. Saints Skipper Lachlan Kennett was instrumental in bringing his side back into the contest with the Visitors kicking a couple themselves making it a 2 goal game at the long break. Kennett must play with an I-Pod as he clearly obeys the lyrics from 'one hit wonder' Chumbawamba's classic 'I get knocked down, but I get up again, ain't you ever gonna keep me down'. This must of rubbed off on his team mates as the St.Pauls midfield contingent of Derek O'Gorman, Ash Rath and Kane Zilm fought hard in the 3rd term with the Saints having more of the play. However the old Raggie heads of Alan Bell, Damian D'ettorre and Paul Kassara played the conditions well, and brought down enough opportunities for Roberts to finish off. Luke Tarca was controlling the Raggies defence while Saints sharpshooter Ivan Novosel was clearly struggling with a leg injury. The Raggies made the most of their chances up front and with a distinguishable 4 goal lead at the final break held on for a 32 point win. Roberts was to be the match winner for the Raggies while arguably Kennett was Best on the Ground. The Raggies head on to next week's Preliminary Final against it's Qualifying Conquerer Houghton in what should be a tight contest. The Saints would be happy with their improvement from last season where they finished 6th (9wins, 9 losses) to a creditable 4th (14 wins, 4 losses) but would no doubt look to improve on this years performance. It all looks possable too for the Saints with the Coach having a strong rapport with his players, only 2 from the 'A' grade squad in the 'Super Rules' (Over 35s) bracket and with a new home at Mawson Lakes things look positive. Time will tell.......

It was equally a 'swimming pool' at Shark Park on Saturday, as both team slugged it out in worse conditions than their round 3 clash. We could not capitalise on our forward entries, while Henley had to deal with a dour defence prepared to rush all and everything. All the best to the Shark lads and their promotion to Div 6, we hope to have one more crack at you lads in the GF if we can get past the resilient Athelstone boys.

Best wishes to Jess 'Sparkles' Gibb who had his face smashed in by a wayward Henley knee, hope the broken nose and stitched lip heals quickly, you are a gutsy defender!!! For the record, we will not be calling an investigation into the incident, that's not how we roll...

Oh that one, yep, the SAAFL called an investigation into a SHOC boundary umpire running onto the ground to stop an altercation, our club responded and said we have no interest in pursuing their investigation. Case closed.

Well done St Pauls and Riddler. Knowing you and having played with you at Ingle Farm i Wasn't sure how you'd slip into the coaching caper, but it looks like you've done it with ease and from a couple of people i've spoken to it sounds like your doing a great job both on and off the field. Good luck for next year i'm sure you'll be up there again. I also know you know a couple of very handy footballers hanging around doing nothing, my advice would be to get in their ear and get them back on the footy field, will be very handy for you
