SANFL 2007 Season must start 1 week earlier than the AFL!

Postby spell_check » Fri Oct 13, 2006 6:20 pm

There is no AFL at all the week before their season starts (in between the Sideshow Cup and Round 1)

Therefore the SANFL must start in that week to encourage those people who don't normally go to SANFL matches to attend in this week!

If people are worried about possible heat then this will help a bit:

An example:
Round 1
Friday Night 23rd March: Norwood vs Sturt (Norwood)
Saturday 24th March: Eagles vs North (Thebarton) - due to Woodville being unavailable for Cricket
Saturday Night: Central vs Port (Elizabeth)
Sunday 25th March: South vs Glenelg (Noarlunga) - this can be a match that starts at 4pm, instead of 2.20pm.

I know that people want to keep the Saturday Afternoon fixture, but the reality is that most football "followers" will watch Crows or Power if they are playing on that day (either if it is here or interstate). And given the success of Sunday football at Glenelg and Noarlunga this year, they should have first access to this day. Every club should get at least one of the following:

A Friday Night Match at either Adelaide or Norwood
A match at Thebarton
A match on Sunday

The SANFL must work around the AFL program as much as possible. It's the only way we are going to see more people at the matches.

Also, given there is no State match next year, there can be 25 rounds played instead of 23. Yes, I know people are going to say it is unfair to break that "5 times each club is played in 2 years" cycle, but remember that it is still unequal within one year. Clubs fortunes can change in one season.

The SANFL should then raise the Salary Cap by 1/10th for next season to allow for the two extra rounds. This surely can't be too hard to stage 2 extra rounds, and this means more SANFL football for everyone!

It will allow greater flexibility to ensure everyone gets to play a Friday Night match, double headers, Thebarton Oval matches not involving Eagles; this would be IMO a fantastic thing for the Competition.

Makes perfect sense to me. Perhaps you should make your submission to the SANFL.

Just one question. How will we determine which AFL listed players would be available for SANFL clubs that weekend?

Not sure. The season started a week eariler in 2002; I can't remember how it went, perhaps it was just up to the Crows and Power if they wanted the players to play or not.

No way!!!! :x Sundays bad enough let alone 4pm start as you must remember not only do the supporters work the next day but so do the players. Footy is all about having a few beers with the boys while watching a game of football. I say stuff the concept of playing different times than Crows games and play footy on Saturday afternoons 2:20pm and no other times except occasional twilight games Saturday night.

It could always be a Saturday 4pm start, but the problem is with not worrying about the Crows and Power is that the majority of football followers in the State do not think like you or I. A 4pm start I have in mind only because of possibly hot weather conditions.

No way, it needs to be the week after.

It should be:

EF/QF: Sunday
1/2SF: Sunday
PF: Friday Night (Both clubs get the same break)
GF: Saturday (PF winner gets one extra day break than normal)

Wouldn't this mean the AFL & SANFL Finals will go head to head in all 4 weeks. Hard task for the SANFL having to programme the finals around what the AFL is doing. Other than that still a fantastic idea. I actually still think the 23 round season is too long. Just wondering what the SANFL could do to improve that.

No this would mean that we have 25 rounds - can't have enough SANFL and this would be 22 matches each - 20 is not enough.

I dont mind getting lights but only for the occasional Satnite game, always prefer Saturday 2:20pm timeslot as it allows more time to do other things at night and a free day before resuming work.
