A Hypothetical Question: Coaching Job Interview

Postby Dissident » Fri Oct 20, 2006 11:08 am

Hi all,

With Ricky MacGowan being asked to coach Sturt, and the talk of players he may or may not be able to bring with him to his new club, a question popped in to my head.

If you were being interviewed by a club for the head coaching role, and you knew of players that wanted to follow you to the club, when asked "What will you bring to the club" and "what changes will you instill" - would you bring up the fact you could get certain players to the club?

Is that a selling point of you becoming head coach?

Thoughts?

bloody good point...id think if someone were to bring it up, do so at the end, if at all....but i think the ppl conducting the interview would like to hear the potential coaches other stronger points...such at attitude, discipline and a game plan, style...

me, i say i wouldnt bring it up....but great question.

That's an interesting question. It would have to be a selling point to a club like Sturt, who with their finances, will struggle to recruit. But, if you didn't get the job and word got around you're floating these names about, you wouldn't be too popular.

It will be interesting to see the ethics involved with MacGowan having been involved at a number of clubs in the past few years.

Taking the Eagles as an example, he obviously got paid to coach with the Eagles this year and would have been delighted to be involved in a premiership etc. I imagine he would have left on good terms, with the Eagles supportive of him taking on a greater role for his own career development. However, do the Eagles say - we gave you this opportunity and are happy for you to coach another league side, but hands off our players? Or does MacGowan sit down with the Eagles and the Eagles let him know which players he can take if he so chooses? Or is it ok for MacGowan to just ask any players he wants to come with him to Sturt?

Lets say you're in your workplace and you are thinking of leaving, or you are applying for a job somewhere. You're either a level above or on equal level with a workmate where you currently are and get on really well in and out of work.

He/she finds out you're applying for a job and off the cuff mentions "take me with you!" and "I'd love to get out of here!"

Then you get the job, and there's a few openings, so you get your old work mate an interview.

It's a similar sort of situation. Footy circles breed much social aspects. I wouldn't be suprised if players had approached Ricky mentioning that they would love to come across if he won the job.

In knowing that - I wonder how much could be/would be brought up in an interview.

apparently the EAGLES are disappointed that RICKY has left, he obviously contributed a lot during his time.

The EAGLES have signed up some players, but there are some players who may leave and go play with RICKY, but i guess that is still to be seen and will be interesting to see if it does happen.

Good question, but,if a club was to recruit or appoint a coach on the basis of players he "may",and lets face it,that sort of thing is a fickle trade,"may" bring to the club, they would be foolish.Until a plyer has signed the dotted line he is not contracted, and for a club to appoint some one on this fact,as I said, would be foolish.

surely this doesn't happen in the SANFL.

yes i agree and know of coaches in country and amateur leagues where new coaches have brought /or players have followed coaches from club to club.

but i would be surprised that a coach trying to get a coaches position at this level would revert to those measures telling a club who he can bring. :D

Maggies - you said what I was going to about the country footy.

I think a discussion on who he could bring as assistant coach, or what coaching structure he would want with which assistants would be more relevant in an interview, as obviously these people are an integral part of the team too.

I know its probably been discussed, but I can't remember people's thoughts on how much influence mcgowan had on getting Grocke and Oakley from North, and Norman had in getting Dabrowski from West.

I dont think it would be the sole reason why an SANFL club would hire someone as coach, but it could be an added bonus to be considered by clubs when deciding who to hire.

I would have thought when a club executive asks what a coach would bring to a club, they would be looking for changes in club directions as far as game plans and discipline are concerned, not so much which players may come to the club, They would leave that sort of thing up to the coach and recruitment people.

Another insightful post from the mighty pussy.

Is that an admission that you normal posts about the premiership coach reek of excrement?

No the eagles are dissappointed he left, his first coaching job of a team was with the eagles reserves... he showed the eagles that they should not be in awe of centrals, good luck to him against all clubs except the reigning premiers

what i should have said was that the EAGLES had resigned players and they had players over from interstate during the finals and im not sure if they have signed them up at this stage.
