3 years as an SANFL coach for 3 flags, not to mention a reserves flag the year before he steped up to league, does any other coach have a record anywhere near that as a start to their career?

Did Norwood have the same coach for its first 6 seasons?

Coaches cant win!

Postby sus » Fri Dec 16, 2005 11:34 am

The psychology of people's attitudes to coaches is interesting. When teams fail its the coaches fault. When teams are successful anyone could have coached them - it was only about player talent. Anyone who has found a way to turn Laird's success into some kind of negative doesnt knwo anything about sport or coaching!!

I have to agree with you sus ... The coach is responsible for far more than positional changes on a Saturday, he needs to mould his own squad, create his own influence, develop younger players, study opposition, plan matchups etc, etc ..

So many talented teams in the past have thought they could just turn up and win (perhaps CDFC 2002, Eagles 94, SFC 78??) only to be bowled over by more comitted outfits!

Ray Laird deserve all the praise he receives!!

it would be hard for Laird to keep Centrals, hungry for sucess, and the turn around the Dogs had in 2005, can pretty much lie 100% with Roy.

He didn't have to do much when he started as Head Coach. Just little bits here and there, cut players here and bring in players there.

Alan Stewart laid the foundations, Laird just happened to be there at the opening

Note same applies for John Buchanan/Aussie cricket team

Roy Laird is very underrated, lots of people like Punky attribute it all to previous coaches but Laird is the one bloke that has been there for a while and not let any major results fall to complancey. He gets the best out of what he's got.
He should be looked at by some AFL clubs.
I've listened to every coach speak at the huddles this year and he was one of the most impressive if not equal top with Jack Cahill.
Other coaches sounded like amateurs at times compared to these 2.
