Some private raised eyes in many sections of the media on many of these. General feeling among some is that it was as much to appease some higher profile media people who had noted that the past two years had seen much recognition to community media (which some areas of the media look down upon quite a bit).

Can someone please tell me what was the Contribution Award for?

If fiveaa got it for their coverage of the SANFL comp then the award had just lost all credibility.

If is was for the Gladstone Appeal what the hell does that have to do with the SANFL league competition and why did the Advertiser say on Saturday it was for their SANFL coverage?

How did RPH fail to even be finalists for the commentary award? Did they not submit an entry in time? Could they not find anything half decent from all the games they did? Is it the judge? Had they pissed him or the SANFL off over something?

I just had a horrible thought. Is it possible that the SANFL aren't even aware who is covering their game? Just makes me wonder.

maybe every banner next year on one round especially if 5aa cover it should have a message to those at the SANFL and thank RPH and Ch31 for their efforts

It is an 'awards night,' after all.

By that very definition, the most deserving rarely win.

Doesn't matter if its the Academy Awards or the SA Football Media Awards, politics often decides the winner.

That is a great idea!

This has hit the nail on the head very well actually. The information I have heard is there was a degree of politics present. A perception that the emergence of one particular show/body was proving more a highlight of the little work being done by some other bodies, and that there was next to no chance it would be acknowledged at any level. Some word already emanating from the castles is that this is not likely to change in 2007 either. Some general annoyance from some bodies that this show even exists, as it highlights their lack of coverage. I suspect most people can join the dots on most of this.

At least those who will hear about the awards know who deserved them. I would be surprised if the Advertiser or Channel 7 even pick this up as a story.

Sent my letter to the Advertiser's editor - not published today.

Anyone got an email address for the right SANFL person to send an email to?

Love the idea of the recognition for community media on the club banners - would be even better to have it on the banner for the State Game as well!

As it turns out Dutchy I took a long awaited kids free weekend away with MrsH, leaving the awards early on Friday night, only getting back yesterday.
I am in no position (and never have been) to make any statement on behalf of the station, if one was to come, that would be from station management.
But why whould there be a "statement" or a "position", it's an awards night after all. Play On

PERSONALLY (refer new signature) all I can say is well done to those who won. I am especially pleased for Don Cooper and Zac Milbank. Don's season summaries in the GF Budget are always excellent and Zac is a first class bloke. I've seen Soda's TV piece on the Noarlunga cars and that was well put together and very funny.

Two years ago everyone (myself especially) was shocked when I picked up two awards, its that kind of night when the unexpected happens.
All other thoughts (including who I think should have collected the Sig Contrib Award) I will keep to myself.

My letter to the SANFL...has anyone else written to them?

Dear Mr Anderson

I refer to the SANFL Media Awards awarded on Friday night. Congratulations to all award winners.

I understand that the awards were decided by independent judges but I must query the discretion of the judges that has been applied in some instances.

5RPH commentated on over 50 SANFL games this year without recognition. Channel 31 produced 30 odd programs without recognition. Life FM were also committed to the SANFL throughout the season without recognition. Some of the major media players who clearly have a focus on AFL (and ratings dictate this), walked away with awards despite only providing media exposure in a concerted manner during the SANFL finals. Phil Herden and others produced a sensational media guide this year. There was no award for any internet site dedicated to SANFL football either.

Most community media personnel and internet site administrators associated with the SANFL volunteer their time and energy. Without them there would be a much more limited focus for promoting the local competition. Whilst some of the aforementioned media outlets and personalities may have been recognised in previous years with awards, this should not obviate them from recognition just because it may be seen to be someone else’s turn.

Although Channel 7, 5AA and the Advertiser/Sunday Mail made major promotional contributions towards the Gladstone appeal, I do not feel that there was a tangible link to the SANFL competition beyond Bob Hammond’s commendable approach. Without being critical of the appeal’s objective to have the league support the country footy community, at the end of the day this was a workplace accident that was also subject to a state Government appeal. In my view, taking a ‘whole of season’ approach, I think Phil Herden for his media guide and Chris Kendall for his voluntary work on the Channel 31 “Total SANFL” show made significant contributions to the whole competition throughout season 2006.

I think it would also be great to consider an award for internet media. Both SA Footy Central and Footy SA are fantastic sites for the avid fans of the local competition and do a tremendous service to the competition. Each club also has a website and perhaps there could be an additional award for best club website as well?

Next year I hope the SANFL provides a lot more financial and other support to community media and personnel, and I know staunch fans of the local competition all share the same view.

I look forward to your response.

Regards,
Steve Bradbury and Michael Milton. Aussie Legends.

My Grandma just got back form England and said they were talking about the SANFL GF on a radio sports show over there.
Good to see some international exposure for us.
i think that station may be close to 5AA's SANFL coverage for the year now.
