Vigor looks like missing out at the expense of Gallions Reach, whose owners are insisting on paying up, despite the trainer not wanting it to run. A farcical situation that the VRC don't look like invoking their discretionary powers, given the relative form of both runners. Gallions Reach will be flat out beating a runner home.

Two things take away from the great race. One, it's a handicap race. Secondly you have situations like you've mentioned above. Vigor is 'many-fold' better than GR. To make the race beyond reproach you have to have the best 24 horses in the race.

Ultimately the best horse should win it, and those two factors make it very difficult for the best horse to do so.

since the VRC decided on inviting these international horses who are no good down and are trained by trainers who have no idea about how to try ang get their chargers to adapt then the this shite will continue.

the Melbourne CUp is the most publicised event but is far from the best horse race in this country

Geez, Shocking has to come into contention with only 51kgs on its back.

I'm on Daffodil - have been for a while, but Shocking is a massive threat.

Surely it is the owners right to run in the race?

If you are an owner and your horse is 300/1, you would be happy to pay the money to see your horse run around safely and make it back to the stalls so that you can say you had a runner in the Melb Cup and maybe get some fees from breeding........however, this isn't Clare race 5 on a Sunday in May...this is the Melb Cup. If you want the premiere race to be the premiere race, treat it as such. The VRC should step in and stop farcical entries.

Deep breath.....

In saying that, it limits my options for a boxed trifecta, so I thank the VRC for their continued support of nags that somehow qualify for the great race

Having said that, Vigor has had it's opportunites to get there ... The VRC probably need to show some faith in their qualification criteria which should be fair to all? (? because I don't know enough about them)

Certainly, if its going to be competitive. That's like saying that a millionaire should run a 2001 model McLaren in a 2009 Formula One race, simply because he can afford to do it. Just not convinced that Gallions Reach will really stack up against this field, whereas Vigor had the form on the board - acknowledging that yes, it has its chance to qualify and its trainer rolled the dice in scratching it yesterday.

i that there probably needs to be an overhaul of the rules and regulations

there are far too many internationals who get invited without having to prove themselves locally first.

this years Cup doesnt possess as much depth as other years.
