Possible Port Recruit

Postby Dogmatic » Fri Dec 16, 2005 8:32 pm

Delisted AFL midfielder Brett Johnson is being courted by several state league clubs.

The Swan Districts product has been in discussion with SANFL club Port Adelaide who are keen to attain his services.

Johnson would be a more than handy acquisition for Swans at Steel Blue Oval, but as is often the case with delisted AFL players, the SANFL clubs have the advantage of offering more lucrative financial playing packages.

Johnson failed to be picked up in the drafts over the past month after playing with Hawthorn and Carlton.

Crikey, the Magpies are going to have a bigger player salary than the Power the way they're going!

The Power might be the third ranked club in SA according to Mark Williams.
If the base payment for an AFL player is $51500 plus $2200 per match, why would you go interstate for a share of $305,000 for each club?

Brett Johnson

As a mad sturt man - I want him to come to the Double Blues. Too me he is a quality player and another player that seems to not be able to stay on an AFL list due to clubs want to have so many younger players. Which ever SANFL club picks him up he would be very handy to them.

He is another Port Magpies signing, RL.

As I said before, Port to buy the premiership.

If we do get him it would be interesting. We seem to be stacking the midfield with recruits, but I would have thought a key forward and key defender would have been higher priorities. We already have a pretty good first string midfield and with second stringers like Harry, Taylor and Gates to hopefully mature and improve a bit it looked pretty secure. So we must have more departures than have been released at the moment.

Anymore blokes going to head down to Alberton for the 2006 season? They will have a fair side indeed next season.

If port do get him, then with clayton and co in the midfield, .....well thats a fair side.

Macca, they have signed Baird and Morrison, so they have their key defenders.

They have also signed Alvey, Bullen, Johnson and Poulton.

These can be added to Clayton, Elstone, Meiklejohn, Waterhouse, etc.

That's 10 delisted AFL players. Other clubs would have offered most of these players a packet to sign.

I thought North were originally way over the salary cap.

Port are making a mockery of it.

Something's got to give.

Listening to idiot Cornes & KG, those morons conveniently overlooked this when they had a sledge at North the other night

I thought Port were in dire financial stife only a few years ago. I guess that donate $2 to save the club strategy worked. These ex-AFL players would all be on fat contracts. It will give me even more satisfaction to watch the eagles beating port next year when their team is loaded with these players. Is the Morrison they signed the ex-Brisbane and Richmond player? If so he is a hack who really won't make an impact next year.

So far with all the recruiting you'd have to say that free of injuries and everyone on the park, Port, North and Centrals (with returning players) look very strong. I think South may have a very potent forward line this year with players like Davey, Warren, Cupido, Ellis and Tuckey(if he plays). For the eagles to remain strong next year, I would like to see a quality rover signed to make up for the loss of Stokes.

So what is this telling us all. The SANFL has no idea on how to keep the salary cap in place and I feel it is time to punish the clubs. If you are caught breaking the salary cap you should not be fined but lose all premiership points ie like what happened to The Bulldogs in the NRL a few years ago. Enough is enough the SANFL has to deal with this mockery of the rules or just can the Salary cap altogether because some clubs are not paying attention to it.

Why should anyone follow the salary cap? If all clubs break it, they're on equal footing. It's only there for the AFL to flex it's muscle over SA, and to boost the VFL, who are 5hit scared of losing players to SA- shoes on the other foot now, they don't like it! Maybe Doug Thomas needs to realise that paying 2 'n' 6 won't attract volunteers, let alone players!

Maybe it's about time the salary cap was upped to 400k but restrict the number of signings to 5 players a year that have not been promoted from juniors.

Why tho? The AFL pinch our best juniors, the VFL (70's-80's) didn't limit the amount of talent they poached, so I say it's only fair that we make this the 2nd best competition in the land, through whatever means necessary. A noble idea, but no practical for SANFL growth.

Mainly because I'm sick of the whingers grizzling about every club but their own:
    allegedly exceeding the salary cap
    Not giving juniors a go
Buying a premiership by importing players

and about players who don't sign up with their team so they MUST be playing for the mighty dollar.

Brett Johnson couldn't even make it into Carlton's starting 18 and they finished bottom. He also got delisted by Hawthorn a few years back and they have been crap for a number of years.
I'm not sure just how good this guy is and what the fuss is all about.

Johnsons problem at AFL level was consistency. He'd pick up 20-25 disposals one week and look excellent and then wouldnt touch it for a month. Elstone was a complete nothing at AFL level...didnt play a game for a top 20 pick in what is recognised as the no.1 draft in AFL history, yet he burned it up this year in the SANFL...so AFL form isnt exactly a sign of how one plays at a lower level.

I still havent seen anywhere confirming Port have signed Morrison and Baird...or Johnson. I think its great having ex-AFL players come to our league.

If Johnson is signed, sealed and delivered then it will be news to Victorian clubs as North Ballarat have indicated they are seeking his services.

Salary cap cheats? If the cap fits, wear it but then again, it wouldn't be the first time that hats didn't fit down at Alberton.
